About Munduk#
High in the mountains of northern Bali, far from the island’s crowded southern beaches, Munduk is a quiet highland village set around 800 metres above sea level, where the air is cool and the hillsides are carpeted in rainforest, coffee and clove plantations. It makes an appealing base for a few days of walking and waterfalls.
The village strings along a steep ridge road above the twin crater lakes of Lake Tamblingan and Lake Buyan, where fishermen still paddle traditional dugout perahu. The surrounding jungle is laced with trails good for trekking and camping, and is home to monkeys, squirrels and abundant birdlife.
Munduk’s best-known draw is its waterfalls. The towering Munduk Waterfall plunges through the forest a short walk from the village, and several others, including Melanting and Golden Valley, lie within easy reach along the same trails. The mineral-rich pools are cold but inviting, and the surrounding plantations offer sweeping views over the valley.
