Tanah Lot
Building Sea temple perched on offshore volcanic rock
A Balinese Hindu temple built on an offshore rock formation, Tanah Lot draws visitors for low-tide access, dramatic sea views and evening ceremonies. Photographers come for sunset silhouettes; vendors and cultural performances cluster on the adjacent shore.
Tanah Lot is a coastal Hindu temple complex built on a prominent offshore rock formation on the west coast of Bali in Tabanan Regency; it is one of Bali’s iconic sea temples and a major cultural landmark. It is commonly associated with Balinese sea-worship and temple rituals dating back several centuries.
The site is best known for the temple perched on the rock and the dramatic waves that break around it, making it a top spot for sunset photography. Visitors use the paved promenades and viewing terraces on the adjacent shore; there are also nearby souvenir markets, gardens and viewing points that frame the temple against the ocean.
The complex is traditionally attributed to a 16th-century Hindu priest who established shrines around Bali; over time the rock and temple have been reinforced with restoration work to protect them from sea erosion and storm damage. The site functions as both an active place of worship and a popular tourist attraction.
Tanah Lot sits on the coast of Beraban village in Tabanan Regency on Bali’s western shoreline, directly facing the Indian Ocean and accessible by road from central Bali towns and resorts.
- Best time: Sunset is the most popular time to visit for views and photography, which can make the site crowded in the late afternoon.
- Tide access: Tide affects access to the rocks - the main sea temple sits on an offshore rock and is reachable across a causeway only when the sea level is low enough.
What to See #
- Pura Tanah Lot (main sea temple): The main shrine sits atop a roughly 10-15 metre high offshore volcanic rock and is accessible on foot across a stone causeway at low tide; the temple compound is not open to the public for unrestricted access but can be viewed from designated visitor areas.
- Batu Bolong: A nearby jagged rock formation with its own small shrine, connected to the shore at low tide and popular with photographers for framing the sunset and waves.
How to Get to Tanah Lot #
Tanah Lot is on Bali’s southwest coast near Tabanan. By car or scooter it’s typically a 30-60 minute drive from central Kuta/Denpasar depending on traffic (roughly 15-25 km); follow the coastal roads west out of Denpasar toward Tabanan and Tanah Lot. There is limited public bus service to this part of Bali, so most visitors go by taxi, driver, scooter or as part of an organized tour.
Parking is adjacent to the coastal temple complex; the temple area and coastal viewpoints are reached by a short walk from the parking and ticket area.
Tips for Visiting Tanah Lot #
- Visit at low tide and in the early morning rather than sunset if you want photographic angles with fewer crowds; sunset is beautiful but the site becomes very packed.
- Check the tide times before you go-certain vantage points and closer shoreline views change dramatically with the tide and with incoming surf.
- Go beyond the main plaza: a short walk along the coast west or east of the temple gives quieter viewpoints and often better compositions without the dense visitor clusters.
