Pura Lempuyang Temple
Pura Lempuyang is the temple complex on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang in Karangasem, eastern Bali, famous for the split-gate "Gateway to Heaven" that frames Mount Agung on the horizon.
About Pura Lempuyang#
The photogenic split gate (candi benti) of Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang perfectly frames the volcanic cone of Mount Agung and has become one of the most iconic images in all of Bali. The gate is only the first of seven temples that climb the forested mountain; reaching the highest sanctuary, Pura Lempuyang Luhur, requires a long ascent of some 1,700 steps. One of Bali’s six revered sad kahyangan directional temples, it lies inland from the east-coast towns of Amlapura and Candidasa.
