Goa Gajah, commonly called the Elephant Cave, is a small archaeological complex near Ubud on Bali that combines a carved cave entrance with a bathing pool and temple structures. It is known for its distinctive rock carvings set into a valley slope.

The carved mouth-like entrance, interior chamber and nearby carved bathing pool are the site’s main features; the complex is integrated with a riverside garden and walkways. Visitors typically view the carvings, the pool with stone fountains and the small temple precincts.

The site dates from Bali’s early historic period and shows Hindu-Buddhist iconographic influence in its stonework and ritual layout; it has been a focus for both archaeological study and local religious practice. Conservation work and visitor management have sought to protect carvings and water features.

Goa Gajah lies a short distance east of central Ubud in central Bali, set in a shallow valley with nearby rice terraces and village access roads, making it a common stop on cultural day tours of the region.

From central Ubud, Goa Gajah is roughly a 10-15 minute drive east on Jl. Raya Goa Gajah. Many visitors hire a driver, scooter, or use a taxi/ride-hail service; limited parking is available on site. The site is walkable from Ubud for those who enjoy a 30-45 minute stroll through village lanes.

• Go early (before 9:00) to avoid tour buses and see the central carving in softer light.
• Wear shoes with grip-the carved stone steps and wet paths down into the complex can be slippery.
• Look for the bathing pool and relics tucked behind the main cave entrance; they're often missed by quick visitors.

Created in the 9th century as a hermitage, Goa Gajah has long captured the imagination of visitors and even inspired the Javanese poem Desawarnana, written in 1365. The name recorded on that manuscript was originally Buddhist and translates as “temple of monks”, denoting a place where a dedicated monk lived and followed the Buddhist path.

The cave’s most striking feature is the relief carved around its entrance, a mass of menacing demons believed to ward off evil spirits; the largest figure resembles an elephant, giving the site its popular name of Elephant Cave. Much of the excavation was carried out in the 1950s, uncovering a large bathing place along with meditation chambers and other rooms. Lingam and yoni statues placed at key points throughout the complex suggest the site served both Buddhist and Hindu ritual practice, and it is now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Goa Gajah lies about two kilometres from the village of Bedulu, a rewarding base for exploring the surrounding countryside.
