North Africa & the Mediterranean Coast (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, northern Libya, northern Egypt)
Early autumn cools quickly in September-the air becomes drier and clearer, ideal for walking the medina quarters of Fes and Marrakech and for coastal escapes like Al Hoceima. Atlas treks in the higher ranges are comfortable again and the sea remains warm enough for swimming. Crowds thin relative to July-August, so this is a preferred month for combining culture and outdoor activities without extreme heat.
Egypt & the Nile Valley (Egypt - Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Red Sea coast)
September cools gradually, with evenings becoming more comfortable and long days still suitable for Nile cruises and temple visits; peak heat dissipates especially in the north. The Red Sea keeps warm waters ideal for diving and snorkeling, and crowds start thinning after summer holidays. Shoulder-season deals start to appear on some cruises and hotels; carry light layers for temperature swings at night.
West Africa & the Sahel (Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria; Sahel fringe: Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, northern Nigeria)
September begins a gradual drying along the coast while the Sahel’s downpours taper: the landscape stays green but roads start to firm up by month’s end, improving access to remote parks. This transitional time can be excellent for wildlife viewing as animals use receding waterholes, and local harvest festivals may occur. Pack both light rain gear and sun protection, and check road conditions before long overland journeys.
East Africa & the Great Lakes (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi)
September is often warm and dry, with the interior parks still offering superb game sightings and calmer weather for crossing photography-friendly plains. The migration’s northern concentration in Kenya continues, and many lodges still operate at full capacity-late-summer discounts are rare. For hikers, Kilimanjaro’s summit weather can be stable but cold; appropriate high-altitude gear and advance acclimatization plans are essential.
The Horn & Northern Highlands (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia)
September begins the waning of the main highland rains in many areas, improving trail access and creating fresh green scenery that is excellent for trekking and photography. Coastal areas remain hot but sea breezes are refreshing, so diving and boat trips in Eritrea and Djibouti are pleasant. Book lodges early if you want to take advantage of improved access before the short rains return in some zones.
Southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi)
September usually starts warming, particularly in the north and east, with light spring rains possible later in the month-this is an excellent time for wildlife viewing as animals are active and vegetation begins to green. Cape Town moves toward spring with improving weather for coastal hiking and vineyards. Visitors should carry sun protection and a light jacket for early mornings and coastal breezes.
Indian Ocean Islands & Madagascar (Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Réunion)
September is often the start of warming and a return to more settled, drier weather across most islands-wildlife activity increases on Madagascar as summer approaches and whales can be seen seasonally off some coasts. Beach season kicks on again in Mauritius and Seychelles, with comfortable seas and steady trade winds. Pack light clothing and consider snorkel gear; this is a good month for combining diving with inland exploration.
