Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.
North Africa & the Mediterranean Coast (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, northern Libya, northern Egypt)
Long, dry heat dominates July in lowland Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria, with daytime temperatures commonly high in Marrakech, Oran and Tunis; desert interiors are extremely hot. The coast still benefits from sea breezes, but inland sightseeing can be fatiguing - plan lighter itineraries, morning starts and siestas. Book well in advance if you want beach hotels or riads in major tourist cities, and be prepared for packed streets and higher prices.
Egypt & the Nile Valley (Egypt - Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Red Sea coast)
July is peak summer heat: Luxor and Aswan regularly experience very high daytime temperatures, and outdoor activities become arduous; however, this is when the Nile cruises and archaeological sites are less crowded than in spring. Take midday breaks, keep to shaded routes in Cairo and avoid walking in the hottest hours; seaside resorts remain busy with Egyptian holidaymakers. Air-conditioned transport and hydration are essential.
West Africa & the Sahel (Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria; Sahel fringe: Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, northern Nigeria)
July is typically the heart of the rainy season across much of the region: Accra, Monrovia and Dakar’s hinterlands see regular, heavy rains; in the Sahel, the rain pattern defines the agricultural year. Tourism slows significantly in rural park areas because tracks become muddy and some community-run camps close for the season, though birding and lush landscapes attract certain specialists. Carry waterproof footwear, insect repellent and flexible itineraries in case of localized flooding.
East Africa & the Great Lakes (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi)
July is frequently cool at altitude with crisp mornings but warm, pleasant days-prime safari time as parks in Kenya, northern Tanzania and the Masai Mara are busy with the Great Migration river crossings. Beaches on Zanzibar and the Kenyan coast are warm, though the sea can be choppier at times; lodges fill quickly and advance booking is essential. Early starts for game drives mean a warm jacket for dawn and insect repellent for dusk drives.
The Horn & Northern Highlands (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia)
July is generally wet and cool in many parts of the Ethiopian highlands-trail conditions can be challenging and some remote lodges close for the season-while the Afar depression and coastal lowlands stay hot. Cultural festivals and agricultural rhythms tie to the rains, giving an authentic window into rural life for those willing to accommodate logistics. Bring waterproofs, sturdy walking shoes and expect fewer international tourists on highland routes.
Southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi)
July remains dry and cool across key safari regions; the Okavango and Central Kalahari are excellent for game-viewing and Kruger Park is busy. Cape Town is in its cool, wet season but still manageable for urban activities, though expect occasional rain and wind. This is peak season for wildlife photography-pack thermal layers for pre-dawn starts and reserve transfers well ahead.
Indian Ocean Islands & Madagascar (Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Réunion)
July remains cool and dry, a favourite month for outdoors activities: Réunion’s cirques and Madagascar’s central routes are excellent for hiking, and Mauritius’ winter is dry and comfortable. Seychelles offers excellent sailing and diving conditions with steady trade winds that can make for brisk catamaran days. Pack a light fleece for mountain nights and layers for the breezy coast.
