Country Weather in November

Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.

North Africa & the Mediterranean Coast (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, northern Libya, northern Egypt)

November sees more frequent Atlantic fronts bringing rain to coastal cities and the northern mountains, and ski resorts can open after early storms. Tourist numbers fall and prices drop, which makes this a good month for museums and off-season cultural travel, but expect some mountain trail closures if snow accumulates. Bring waterproof footwear and a warm midlayer for evenings inland.

Egypt & the Nile Valley (Egypt - Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Red Sea coast)

November brings comfortable, dry conditions-Cairo and Upper Egypt have warm days and cool nights, perfect for long days of archaeology and city wandering. Cultural calendars pick up with festivals and outdoor evening shows at Luxor and Aswan; this is a popular month for Nile cruises and a good time to book. Pack a light jacket for night-time on the deck, but daytime clothing can be light and breathable.

West Africa & the Sahel (Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria; Sahel fringe: Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, northern Nigeria)

November typically has dry, dusty Harmattan winds arriving in the Sahel and even reaching the southern Gulf of Guinea, reducing humidity and creating hazy skies; coastal capitals are warm and mostly dry. This is a preferred window for overland itineraries, city festivals and coastal beaching, with fewer logistical issues from rain and improved road access. Carry a scarf for dust and sun protection for strong daytime sun.

East Africa & the Great Lakes (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi)

November sees patchy showers and a mixed shoulder season feeling: northern parks may receive rain yet southern circuits often become greener and quieter, while the coastal climate turns more humid as rains pick up. Wildlife disperses across wider areas with new growth, and birding is excellent. Bring quick-drying clothes, a light fleece for higher altitudes and be flexible with internal flight schedules during the wetter days.

The Horn & Northern Highlands (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia)

November brings cool, dry conditions to the highlands with clear skies and chilly nights - excellent for trekking and for exploring Ethiopia’s historic north without the wet-season challenges. Djibouti and Eritrea have pleasant, warm conditions for diving and marine excursions. Travelers should book accommodations ahead if visiting during the Ethiopian Christmas and New Year periods, and bring warm sleepers for high-altitude camps.

Southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi)

November is often hot and increasingly humid, with the first rains arriving as patchy thundershowers across Zambia, Zimbabwe and northern South Africa-roads in remote areas may be affected, but crowds are moderate. This is a good shoulder month to find deals on lodges before the summer peak, and coastal Mozambique is in full summer mode for beachgoers. Plan for sudden storms, bring waterproofs and expect rising insect activity.

Indian Ocean Islands & Madagascar (Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Réunion)

November is often the start of increasing humidity and occasional heavy showers as the wet season creeps back toward the islands; Madagascar’s north and east begin to warm markedly. Cyclone risk remains low at the start of the month but increases toward January-March-monitor forecasts if traveling later in the season. Prepare for a mix of sun and showers, bring insect repellent and flexible bookings for boat-based activities.
