Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.
North Africa & the Mediterranean Coast (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, northern Libya, northern Egypt)
May brings noticeably warmer weather along the Mediterranean and the southern Atlas foothills; Tangier and Algiers generally enjoy warm, dry days, while inland desert fringes begin to bake. Coastal breezes still break the heat, making it pleasant for seaside promenades; this month also precedes the intense peak of summer, so accommodations are easier to find than in July-August. Take lighter clothing but keep a layer for cooler evenings in higher towns like Ifrane.
Egypt & the Nile Valley (Egypt - Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Red Sea coast)
By May the warmth escalates-Cairo is hot and dry, and Upper Egypt grows very hot; daytime activities demand early starts and shaded rest. The Red Sea resorts are beginning their busiest season for sun-seekers and divers; low humidity makes heat more tolerable but nights remain warm. Plan shorter sightseeings slots, carry plenty of water, and expect higher hotel rates along popular stretches.
West Africa & the Sahel (Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria; Sahel fringe: Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, northern Nigeria)
May is the start of the coastal and forested zone’s main rainy season in many parts of West Africa-accumulating storms bring heavy afternoon downpours in Abidjan and Accra-while the Sahel sees the first seasonal thunderstorms. This is shoulder season for beach tourism because heavy rains can come in short, intense bursts and make dirt roads muddy. Travelers should pack quick-drying clothing and be ready for transport disruptions in rural areas.
East Africa & the Great Lakes (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi)
May sees rains tapering in many areas and a fresh, green landscape emerging-highland coffee regions, Rwanda’s hills and Uganda’s forests are especially pleasant for trekking and gorilla viewing. Road access improves as tracks dry and bird migration activity is high, making this a strong shoulder-season for nature lovers. Pack breathable rainproofs and a warm layer for higher-altitude nights, and reserve gorilla permits well in advance.
The Horn & Northern Highlands (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia)
May sees the onset of the northern wet season building in parts of the highlands; heavy rains are possible in Bale and Simien ranges as the Kiremt approaches. Lowland regions in Djibouti and Somalia enter their hottest weeks; clear, dry conditions persist in some coastal pockets. For highland trekking, watch short-term forecasts, as heavy rainfall can affect trail safety and visibility; bring rainproof gear and sturdy boots.
Southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi)
May brings pleasantly cool, dry days across much of the subcontinent; Cape Town becomes mild and increasingly attractive for urban and coastal tourism as the inland remains comfortable for safaris. The Okavango is still high and game viewing by boat is excellent while raptor migrations boost birding in certain regions. Expect shoulder-season rates easing before the peak winter tourism months and bring a warm jacket for chilly mornings.
Indian Ocean Islands & Madagascar (Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Réunion)
May typically brings drier, cooler conditions to Madagascar’s highlands and to Réunion, making hiking pleasant and improving road conditions in many regions; coastal Mauritius and Seychelles enter a more stable, drier period. Whale-watching around Réunion and Réserve areas can be good in certain months, and turtle nesting in some zones begins to pick up. Bring layered clothing for cooler highland evenings and sunscreen for bright seaside days.
