North Africa & the Mediterranean Coast (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, northern Libya, northern Egypt)

By October the region is pleasantly warm by day with crisp evenings; the Mediterranean coast gets occasional storms later in the month while the Atlas shows the first patches of high-country frost overnight. It’s an excellent period for city visits and for heading into the desert before winter lows; ferry crossings tend to be smoother than in winter storm months. Pack layers for cool nights and a rain jacket for the odd shower on the coast.

Egypt & the Nile Valley (Egypt - Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Red Sea coast)

October often has some of the best weather for exploring Egypt-daytime temperatures are warm but manageable, and nights are pleasant, making it an excellent month for combining cultural tours with a beach stay. Visibility for diving is generally good and river cruises run full schedules. Expect increasing international tourist numbers compared to summer but far less oppressive heat than earlier months.

West Africa & the Sahel (Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria; Sahel fringe: Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, northern Nigeria)

October sees the coastal rainy season winding down and humidity easing; Accra and Abidjan are more pleasant for beach and city travel, while the Sahel is finishing its wet cycle and returning to dusty conditions. Farmer’s harvests and regional markets become lively after the rains, offering good opportunities for cultural visits and photography. Bring layers for cool early mornings in the north and expect clearer skies for overland travel.

East Africa & the Great Lakes (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi)

October commonly brings the short rains in parts of East Africa, particularly in October-December, making game roads muddier and some parks quieter than in the peak months; however overall temperatures remain warm. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda continues year-round but can be muddier; expect fewer crowds and lush forest conditions. Pack waterproofs and consider guided treks that accommodate unpredictable paths.

The Horn & Northern Highlands (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia)

October is often drier and milder in the highlands with comfortable trekking conditions resurfacing; cultural sites like Lalibela and Axum are easier to visit with less mud and better roads. The coastal Gulf of Aden remains very warm, while some inland lowlands begin to cool slightly overnight. Pack layers for cool mountain mornings and expect crowded local transport if you visit during regional festivals.

Southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi)

October warms into late spring: Mozambique and the Zambezi valley grow hot and humid with occasional pre-summer storms, while Botswana and Namibia see sun-drenched days ideal for photography. Wildebeest-like migrations are not a Southern Africa staple, but this month is good for combining beach time in Mozambique with safaris inland. Pack insect repellent and lighter layers for hot midday temperatures and cooler dawn game drives.

Indian Ocean Islands & Madagascar (Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Réunion)

October usually brings warmer, sunnier weather, and the islands come into their main tourist season with pleasant sea temperatures and good diving visibility across Seychelles and Mauritius. Madagascar’s east coast may begin to see increased humidity and sporadic showers, but the central highlands remain comfortable for trekking. Expect rising visitor numbers and book popular excursions like whale-watching or diving trips in advance.
