North Africa & the Mediterranean Coast (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, northern Libya, northern Egypt)

By April the countryside is green and warm-Marrakech sees comfortable daytime heat, coastal resorts start to feel summery, and lavender and wildflowers appear on lower Atlas slopes. This is one of the best months to visit for hiking and city touring because crowds are still moderate and airfares often lower than in summer. Mountain roads are usually clear but pack sun protection for bright days and a sweater for nights.

Egypt & the Nile Valley (Egypt - Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Red Sea coast)

April is the onset of strong heat, especially away from the coast: Luxor and Aswan become hot by mid-month and daytime touring is best in the morning and late afternoon. Ramadan (dates vary by year) may fall in this period and can affect opening hours and meal availability during the day, while cultural rhythms shift in cities. If diving the Red Sea, water temperatures are comfortable and visibility is good; bring lightweight breathable layers and expect fewer crowds on Nile decks mid-afternoon.

West Africa & the Sahel (Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria; Sahel fringe: Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, northern Nigeria)

April tends to be hot and increasingly humid along the southern coast while the Sahel grows hotter as the rainy season approaches; bushfires and dust can reduce visibility in some savanna areas. Coastal capitals still offer comfortable sea breezes, but inland areas such as Bamako experience very warm afternoons. Plan early-morning game drives and reserve flexible travel plans as roads in rural areas may be affected once rains begin to fall.

East Africa & the Great Lakes (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi)

April is often the wettest month in the region: prolonged showers and muddy roads are typical across much of Kenya and Tanzania, which affects accessibility to the more remote parks like the southern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara. This is a low season for tourism-prices fall and lodges run maintenance-so it’s a practical month for travelers who can accept limited game-viewing windows and want quieter accommodations. Waterproof layers, insect repellent and travel insurance for transport disruptions are advisable.

The Horn & Northern Highlands (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia)

April is a transitional month - the Ethiopian highlands may begin pre-monsoon rains in places, while lowland coasts grow hotter and more humid. Trekking on lower slopes remains doable, but be prepared for some showers and muddy tracks at higher elevations. If planning to visit rift-valley lakes or coastal dive sites, book in advance and expect warm daytime conditions with cooler, breezy evenings inland.

Southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi)

April typically marks the end of the rainy season in much of the interior: temperatures moderate, landscapes dry out, and roads firm up-prime conditions return for overland safaris into Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia. South Africa’s winelands in the Western Cape enter mild, crisp autumn weather ideal for vineyard touring. Pack a mix of warm layers for cool early mornings on game drives and lighter clothes for sunny afternoons.

Indian Ocean Islands & Madagascar (Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Réunion)

April often marks the end of the main wet season in Madagascar and Mauritius; landscapes are lush, waterfalls are full and mosquitoes remain prevalent in some areas. Seychelles enjoys calm, warm waters and good diving conditions as humidity eases; Réunion has milder mountain weather suitable for cirque hikes. This is a promising shoulder season for fewer crowds, but always check recent weather history before booking remote lodges.
