Country Weather in October

Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.

Horn of Africa (Ethiopia’s lowlands, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea)

October brings a shift: parts of Somalia and eastern Ethiopia may receive some deyr/short rains into November, while Eritrean and Djiboutian coasts cool a little. Highland Ethiopia becomes much drier and cleaner after the rains, improving visibility on treks and opening routes in the Simien and Bale ranges. Travelers heading to Somali ports should expect muddy interludes in rural areas, but cities are generally accessible; pack light rain gear and boots if you plan to move off paved roads.

Ethiopian Highlands & Rift (Addis Ababa, Lalibela, Simien, Bale)

October often brings a firming of trails and a drier feel, especially late in the month, making it one of the better months to return to highland trekking and long-distance drives. Addis is pleasant, with warm afternoons and cool nights, and visibility improves for mountain panoramas. Expect a step up in visitor numbers compared with the mid-year lull, so secure guides and permits early if planning multi-day treks.

Kenya & Northern Tanzania Savannas (Nairobi, Maasai Mara, Serengeti, Amboseli, Kilimanjaro)

October sees the short rains begin in many zones, often arriving as brief afternoon storms that freshen the landscape but do not usually close parks for long. The Serengeti’s southern plains recover after the dry season and the Great Migration’s location shifts - October can be a quieter transitional month for some lodges. For mountain treks, afternoon showers may appear; pack a light waterproof and expect cooling nights above 2,000-3,000 m.

Zanzibar & Tanzanian Coast (Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar Archipelago, Pemba, Mafia)

October is the start of the short rains and humidity climbs again with occasional downpours that can be heavy but brief; reef visibility may drop on stormy days. Bird migration and nesting patterns shift on islands like Pemba, so birding can be rewarding despite intermittent showers. Travelers should expect some rain-related interruptions to boat schedules and plan flexible connections between islands and the mainland.

Uganda, Rwanda & Lake Victoria Basin (Kampala, Entebbe, Kigali, Bwindi, Lake Victoria)

October marks the start of the shorter October-November rains for much of the basin: showers increase and trails can again become slippery, particularly in the western national parks and on Lake Victoria’s beaches. Tourist volumes are often lower, so it’s a reasonable window for flexible travelers who do not mind some wet weather. Bring waterproof layers and sturdy trekking boots for any gorilla or forest hikes scheduled this month.

Indian Ocean Islands (Seychelles, Comoros, Mauritius, Mayotte)

October typically warms slightly and humidity rises as the austral spring progresses, with some showers becoming more likely toward month-end; islands still enjoy mostly settled weather suitable for beach time and sightseeing. Mauritius starts to green up and waterfalls revive after the dry winter, while Seychelles remains reliably pleasant. This shoulder month often offers reasonable rates before the wet season picks up.
