Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.

Horn of Africa (Ethiopia’s lowlands, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea)

Days are very hot along the Red Sea coast and lowland Somalia, and January is one of the driest and sunniest months - expect clear skies in Djibouti City, Berbera and the Somali coast with daytime temperatures often 28-35°C while highland Ethiopia stays cooler. Travel into lowland towns is straightforward, but pack light clothing, sun protection and water; roads can be dusty and winds pick up along the coast. Short cultural visits in Addis are pleasant, but highland rains are still absent so trekking at lower altitudes is dry and dusty.

Ethiopian Highlands & Rift (Addis Ababa, Lalibela, Simien, Bale)

Mornings are crisp and often below 10°C around Addis Ababa and the higher plateaus in January, with bright, dry days ideal for cultural touring and trekking on well-drained trails. Snow can linger on the highest peaks like Ras Dashen but is uncommon at lower elevations; pack a warm layer for early mornings and evenings. Roads are generally reliable and this month is one of the best for visiting rock churches and highland markets without the mud of the rainy season.

Kenya & Northern Tanzania Savannas (Nairobi, Maasai Mara, Serengeti, Amboseli, Kilimanjaro)

Highland mornings in Nairobi and Amboseli are cool and dry in January, but daytime temperatures climb pleasantly into the low 20s-mid 20s°C; the savannahs of the Maasai Mara and northern Serengeti are warm and mostly dry, making January excellent for game drives and birding. The Serengeti calving season peaks around late January-February - expect many predators on the move and dusty tracks in parks. Pack sun protection, a warm layer for early morning game drives, and expect fewer heavy rains.

Zanzibar & Tanzanian Coast (Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar Archipelago, Pemba, Mafia)

Early-year days on the Tanzanian coast are hot and humid in January, with plenty of sun and warm sea temperatures that make snorkeling, diving and beach time excellent around Zanzibar and Mafia Island. Sea conditions are generally calm and visibility is good, though evenings are muggy - light cottons and reef-safe sunscreen are essential. Expect higher prices and more boat traffic in January as holiday travelers and divers take advantage of the dry stretch.

Uganda, Rwanda & Lake Victoria Basin (Kampala, Entebbe, Kigali, Bwindi, Lake Victoria)

Dewy, cool mornings and warm afternoons make January a pleasant month for visiting Kampala, Entebbe and Kigali, with relatively low rainfall and comfortable conditions for gorilla tracking in Bwindi and Volcanoes National Park. Gorilla permits sell briskly in this window, so expect high demand and early bookings - bring warm layers for pre-dawn starts and sturdy gaiters for muddy trails. Lake Victoria’s shores are warm and often calm, suitable for boat trips before the long rains.

Indian Ocean Islands (Seychelles, Comoros, Mauritius, Mayotte)

Trade-wind mornings and warm, calm seas commonly define January across the Seychelles, Comoros and Mauritius, but this is also within the broader November-April wet/cyclone window so occasional heavy showers and tropical squalls can occur. The islands are humid and lush, with creole festivals and active marine life - divers should watch forecasts for visibility dips after storms. Travelers should book well in advance for New Year and carry light rain protection for sudden showers.
