East Africa in June: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Horn of Africa (Ethiopia’s lowlands, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea)

By June the long rains taper in Somalia while Eritrea, Djibouti and coastal areas turn hot and very dry; daytime heat intensifies along the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The onset of the Ethiopian kiremt (major wet season) is just beginning in the highlands, so Addis, Bahir Dar and the Simien mountains move into their rainier months with frequent afternoon showers. Trekking in highland Ethiopia becomes muddy and streams swell; for lowland travel, plan for high temperatures and secure water supplies.

Ethiopian Highlands & Rift (Addis Ababa, Lalibela, Simien, Bale)

June is the start of the kiremt proper in many highland zones - daily showers and heavy storms make the landscape very lush, but also create poor visibility on long-distance vistas and tricky trail conditions. Addis’s daytime temperatures remain moderate, yet afternoons are likely to be wet; the Bale Mountains and Simien ranges see reduced trekking windows. This is a low season for international visitors: services may be quieter but plan for cancellations and bring dependable waterproof gear.

Kenya & Northern Tanzania Savannas (Nairobi, Maasai Mara, Serengeti, Amboseli, Kilimanjaro)

June marks the start of the drier season across much of Kenya and northern Tanzania as the long rains end, leaving green plains and firming tracks - an excellent time for game drives in Maasai Mara and the southern Serengeti. The Great Migration often begins to push northwards; by late June, crossings and predator activity increase. Daytime temperatures are moderate but early morning drives remain cold; bring warm layers for dawn safaris.

Zanzibar & Tanzanian Coast (Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar Archipelago, Pemba, Mafia)

June ushers in the dryer, cooler season along the coast and islands with clear skies and steadier seas - ideal for diving, deep-water fishing and long beach days. Sea breezes help moderate the heat along Stone Town’s promenades and Nungwi’s beaches; conditions are favorable for spotting spinner dolphins and for kite-surfing in selected spots. This is one of the most reliable months for outdoor coastal activities and for crossing between islands.

Uganda, Rwanda & Lake Victoria Basin (Kampala, Entebbe, Kigali, Bwindi, Lake Victoria)

June brings one of the drier periods of the year with firmer trails and more predictable weather across the highlands - ideal for gorilla trekking and longer overland journeys. Kigali and Kampala are pleasant for city visits and cultural tours, and boat services on Lake Victoria become more reliable. However, evenings can be cool in highland regions; pack layered clothing for early starts and cooler nights.

Indian Ocean Islands (Seychelles, Comoros, Mauritius, Mayotte)

June sees steady southeast trade winds and generally calm weather in the Seychelles, and Mauritius settles into its cooler, drier winter with pleasant days ideal for hiking and coastal drives. Comoros can be slightly cooler and drier as well - these months bring lower humidity and clearer seas for diving or whale-watching in certain seasons. Visitors should bring a windproof layer for breezy evenings and expect high-season rates to start rising.
