East Africa in July: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Horn of Africa (Ethiopia’s lowlands, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea)

July is the peak of the Ethiopian highland wet season: persistent afternoon rains and cool, damp conditions dominate Addis, Gondar and the Bale Mountains, limiting highland trekking and making some rural roads treacherous. Coastal Djibouti and northern Somalia experience their hottest period with very little relief - sea breezes can help in port towns but expect oppressive humidity in sheltered areas. Humanitarian and overland travel across southern Somalia remains challenging during residual seasonal flooding.

Ethiopian Highlands & Rift (Addis Ababa, Lalibela, Simien, Bale)

July continues as a reliably wet month in much of the Ethiopian plateau with cool, damp afternoons and a high risk that high-altitude trails will be waterlogged or closed for safety. Cultural sites are still visited by those willing to accept showery conditions and lower crowds; photographers will find saturated colours and swollen lakes. For serious trekking, postpone until drier months if you prefer firm trails and less logistical uncertainty.

Kenya & Northern Tanzania Savannas (Nairobi, Maasai Mara, Serengeti, Amboseli, Kilimanjaro)

July is one of the best months for safari in this region: dry conditions concentrate wildlife at rivers and lakes, and migration spectacles are prominent in the Mara and northern Serengeti. Highlands like Amboseli are cool in the mornings and evenings with crisp air; Kilimanjaro treks are in a stable dry window (still cold above 3,000 m). Expect higher visitor numbers and book guides and small-plane seats well in advance for park transfers.

Zanzibar & Tanzanian Coast (Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar Archipelago, Pemba, Mafia)

July is prime coastal season with warm, sunny days and a cooling offshore breeze that keeps humidity manageable; sunsets on the Zanzibar beaches are spectacular for late-afternoon walks. Marine conditions remain calm and clear, good for snorkeling and diving around Mnemba and Mafia, and stone-town cultural tours are comfortable in daylight hours. Expect higher international visitor numbers and secure bookings for popular beachfront accommodations.

Uganda, Rwanda & Lake Victoria Basin (Kampala, Entebbe, Kigali, Bwindi, Lake Victoria)

July stays cool and dry for the Lake Victoria basin and adjoining highlands: trekking conditions are generally stable and visibility for mountain scenery improves, making it a top window for gorilla permits and birding. Road travel is easier and intercity connections run on schedule, though some skies can still spit sporadic showers. Expect higher demand for permits and lodges, especially in Kigali and Bwindi regions - book in advance.

Indian Ocean Islands (Seychelles, Comoros, Mauritius, Mayotte)

July keeps cool, dry trade winds across the island chain and presents reliable conditions for diving, snorkeling and beach activities - Seychelles in particular has excellent underwater visibility. Mauritius is comfortable and lively, with botanical gardens and coastal walks at their best; humpback whale season in surrounding waters may offer sightings depending on the route. Book popular lodges early in July and August as European visitors peak.
