Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.
Horn of Africa (Ethiopia’s lowlands, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea)
February brings more of the dry, inland heat that dominates the Horn’s coastal plains: Djibouti and northern Somalia typically see little rain and warm nights, while Eritrea’s lowland ports are hot and humid. Addis Ababa and other highland towns are cool in the mornings (single digits to low teens°C) but warm in afternoons; it’s a fine month for visiting Lalibela’s rock churches or trekking in the Simien foothills before the big rains. Travelers should be prepared for strong sun and occasional dust storms, and expect fewer crowds outside major pilgrimage weeks.
Ethiopian Highlands & Rift (Addis Ababa, Lalibela, Simien, Bale)
A clear, cool atmosphere continues through February across the highlands - Lalibela’s stone churches and the Simien escarpments are comfortable for long days outdoors and visibility is excellent for mountain photography. By late February the days lengthen and daytime temperatures rise slightly, making it a fine time for multi-day treks in Bale Mountains National Park. Expect fewer tourists than during the northern summer, and bring a warm jacket for nights above 2,000-3,000 m.
Kenya & Northern Tanzania Savannas (Nairobi, Maasai Mara, Serengeti, Amboseli, Kilimanjaro)
February continues the dry, hot pattern across the plains: Maasai Mara and northern Serengeti are typically dry and game congregates around waterholes, while Mount Kilimanjaro’s slopes remain cold at altitude with snow higher up. This is a good month for clear skies and big-sky photography in Amboseli and Tsavo, but heat in lowland camps can be intense in midday. Book popular conservancy camps early - February is a favored window for safari travel with low mud risks.
Zanzibar & Tanzanian Coast (Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar Archipelago, Pemba, Mafia)
February stays beach-friendly and typically dry along the coast and islands: Zanzibar Town and the smaller islands remain comfortable for island-hopping, spice tours and late-afternoon dhow sails. Water temperatures are warm and visibility is often at its year-long peak for diving the Mnemba Atoll and nearby reefs. Travelers should book popular lodges ahead of time; mosques and local festivals may create lively neighborhood activity in Stone Town.
Uganda, Rwanda & Lake Victoria Basin (Kampala, Entebbe, Kigali, Bwindi, Lake Victoria)
February remains one of the drier months in the Lake Victoria basin and interlacustrine highlands: hiking trails and forest tracks are in good shape and visibility for mountain panoramas is high. Rwanda’s cities are comfortable for walking tours and coffee estate visits, while Uganda’s national parks are easier to cross without the mud of the rainy season. Travelers should still pack rain protection for unexpected showers and a warm jumper for cooler highland nights.
Indian Ocean Islands (Seychelles, Comoros, Mauritius, Mayotte)
February often remains humid and warm with intermittent heavy rains possible as the cyclone-prone season peaks; Mauritius and the Comoros can receive the most significant storms during this period while Seychelles tends to be less directly affected but still wetter. Beach and water activities can be excellent between squalls, but always check local marine warnings and island flight schedules. Island lodgings may offer flexible re-booking during this meteorologically active month.
