East Africa in November: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Horn of Africa (Ethiopia’s lowlands, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea)

November is often the month of the deyr/short rains in southern Somalia and can be unsettled in adjacent lowland plains, while Djibouti and Eritrea enjoy milder, mostly dry weather with comfortable evenings. Addis and the Ethiopian highlands are cool and drying out, making November one of the better months for cultural sightseeing and trekking at altitude. Be mindful that some rural roads remain damaged from earlier rains, and that inter-regional overland travel can take extra time.

Ethiopian Highlands & Rift (Addis Ababa, Lalibela, Simien, Bale)

Travel windows expand in November as the kiremt ends and the highlands dry, with mostly sunny days and crisp nights that suit both cultural sightseeing and multi-day hikes. Beach complements on the Tanzanian coast or Kenyan coast can be combined at this time - expect warmer, humid conditions there.

November usually brings a wetter, unsettled pattern with more frequent showers and higher sea swells than the dry months, though there remain many dry spells suitable for beach time. Lodges may re-open after the lower shoulder-season staffing period and prices are often more attractive. Indian Ocean Islands (Seychelles, Comoros, Mauritius, Mayotte)

November finds increasing humidity and the first of the wetter bursts as the wet/cyclone season approaches, particularly affecting Mauritius and Comoros more than the northern Seychelles. Marine conditions can be variable, with some days of heavy rain; check forecasts if planning remote dives or ferry hops. This is a quieter shoulder period for travelers seeking lower prices but requires flexibility around weather-related schedule changes.
