Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.
Horn of Africa (Ethiopia’s lowlands, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea)
April is the leading month for the long rains in parts of Somalia and the southern lowlands of Ethiopia - the Gu in Somalia peaks around April-May, bringing heavy, sometimes flooding downpours to riverine areas. Djibouti and Eritrea see only sporadic showers; temperatures rise markedly in lowland areas and humidity climbs near the coast. Road travel across Somalia’s south and the lowlands of eastern Ethiopia can be disrupted; avoid bush travel at the height of localized floods and plan extra time for connections.
Ethiopian Highlands & Rift (Addis Ababa, Lalibela, Simien, Bale)
April sees the highlands move toward the main kiremt wet season: frequent afternoon thunderstorms begin to form, especially in the north and west, turning the countryside intensely green and rivers higher. Trekking in areas like the Simien and Bale can still be rewarding in drier windows, but expect muddy trails and possible trail closures after heavy storms. Cultural sightseeing in Lalibela and Gonder is still possible; pack rainproof outer layers and plan extra time for intercity drives.
Kenya & Northern Tanzania Savannas (Nairobi, Maasai Mara, Serengeti, Amboseli, Kilimanjaro)
April is the wettest month in many areas: heavy, often prolonged rains can lead to flooded tracks and occasional park access issues in Amboseli, the Mara and parts of the Serengeti. Many mobile camps close or reduce services; overland routes can be slow. Travelers should expect muddy conditions, possible flight cancellations on small planes and the need for resilient gear - but the parks are green, birding is superb, and visitor numbers are low, so rates can be better.
Zanzibar & Tanzanian Coast (Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar Archipelago, Pemba, Mafia)
April is typically the wettest month for the Tanzanian coast and Zanzibar, with frequent, sometimes prolonged rains that can lead to rough seas and reduced visibility for diving excursions. Many lodges reduce activities and some boat operators suspend services on stormy days; road surfaces in rural areas may become sticky and slow. This is a quieter time for visitors and rates often drop, but travelling between islands may become intermittent.
Uganda, Rwanda & Lake Victoria Basin (Kampala, Entebbe, Kigali, Bwindi, Lake Victoria)
April is usually the wettest month for much of the Uganda-Rwanda region, with persistent and sometimes torrential rains that can close mountain tracks and slow road travel significantly. Visibility in the forested gorilla parks is lower and trails are muddy; some lodges reduce activities to protect trails. This is a quieter travel time with lower prices, but expect the logistical challenges of the wet season and pack strong, water-resistant footwear.
Indian Ocean Islands (Seychelles, Comoros, Mauritius, Mayotte)
April marks a gradual reduction in storm risk for some islands but remains within the wet season for much of the Indian Ocean group; the landscape is very green and waterfalls flow strongly on Mauritius and Comoros. Diving can be variable with plankton blooms after heavy rains, yet there are many dry stretches and cultural life is active. Travelers should keep flexible plans and consider travel insurance that covers weather delays during this shoulder-to-wet month.
