Apo Reef Natural Park
National Park Second-largest contiguous coral reef system, marine park
Off Mindoro, Apo Reef Natural Park is a marine protected area famed for snorkeling and diving over extensive coral slopes, day-boat trips and abundant reef fish.
Apo Reef Natural Park is a marine protected area off the coast of western Mindoro, Philippines, and is the largest contiguous coral reef system in the country. It is internationally noted as one of the largest contiguous coral reefs in the world and is managed for conservation and marine tourism.
The reef system includes extensive coral slopes, reef flats and a small sandy cay used by visitors; the park supports scuba diving, snorkeling and wildlife viewing with frequent sightings of reef fish, turtles and large pelagics. Clear-water dive sites and steep coral walls are major attractions that draw divers from regional gateways.
The area was designated a protected area under Philippine law to conserve its reef ecosystems and marine life, with formal protection implemented to regulate fishing and tourism activities. Management aims to balance conservation with controlled visitor access.
The park lies off the coast of Sablayan in Occidental Mindoro, reached by boat from Sablayan town on Mindoro; it occupies an offshore reef complex surrounded by open sea.
- Best dive season: Clear water visibility is often best from January to April, which is the high season for diving and boat trips.
- Access: Boat access is commonly from Sablayan on the western coast of Mindoro; trips are typically day trips or multi-day liveaboard itineraries.
What to See #
- Apo Island cay: A small sandy cay with a lighthouse and resting spots for visiting boats; commonly used as a surface-rest area between dive sites.
- Main reef system: Extensive fringing and barrier reef formations including the West and North reef sectors where most diving and snorkeling take place, with steep drop-offs and coral slopes.
- Diving and snorkel sites: Several named dive sites with coral walls, bommies and channels that attract pelagics and schooling fish; sites are accessed by liveaboard or day boats from Sablayan.
Tips for Visiting Apo Reef Natural Park #
- Plan diving or snorkeling trips in the dry season (roughly November-May) when seas are calmer and visibility is best for the outer reefs.
- Most visitors depart from Sablayan on Mindoro - book your boat transfer or liveaboard through a Sablayan-based operator so you reach the prime dive sites at first light.
- Consider a multi-day liveaboard or overnight stay rather than a rushed day trip: multi-day trips give you earlier arrival at the outer reef and more flexible dive/snorkel windows.
- Bring cash for mandatory park and environmental fees and expect very limited facilities on Apo Reef itself - operators usually collect fees at Sablayan before departure.
