Mindoro
Island Philippine island with mountain ranges, beaches, and biodiversity
Mindoro attracts divers and trekkers: Puerto Galera’s dive sites and beaches, Mount Halcon’s remote ridges for experienced hikers, and Apo Reef marine park off the western coast for coral and pelagic life.
Mindoro is a large Philippine island west of Luzon, split into Oriental and Occidental Mindoro provinces. The island combines coastal reefs and beaches with a steep, forested interior and several significant mountain peaks.
Primary visitor draws include beach resorts and dive sites around Puerto Galera, the offshore protected coral systems of Apo Reef Natural Park, and trekking in the interior around peaks such as Mount Halcon (roughly 2,600 meters). Marine conservation zones and dive operators provide access to reefs and marine biodiversity.
Mindoro has long-standing indigenous Mangyan populations inhabiting the interior. Over time the island developed agricultural lowlands and coastal towns that became service hubs for tourism and ferry connections to Luzon.
Mindoro lies southwest of Luzon across the Verde Island Passage and east of the Mindoro Strait; main access points from Luzon include ferries and short flights to Calapan and San Jose.
- Administration and access: The island is divided administratively into Oriental Mindoro and Occidental Mindoro provinces and is served by ports and airports at Calapan and San Jose.
- Indigenous peoples: Home to indigenous Mangyan communities with several distinct tribal groups and cultural traditions still present across the island interior.
What to See #
- Puerto Galera: Puerto Galera on the northeastern coast is a long-established beach and diving area with multiple dive sites and reef access from local piers.
- Apo Reef Natural Park: Apo Reef Natural Park off the west coast is a protected marine area featuring extensive coral reef flats and channels; it is administered as a marine protected area.
- Mount Halcon: Mount Halcon is a rugged, forested peak in central Mindoro rising to around 2,600 meters and noted for steep terrain and remoteness.
