Kigali & Central Plateau
September warms slightly with the tail of the dry season; days are sunnier and humidity begins to creep up, though rainfall is still limited. It’s a convenient month for visiting Kigali’s galleries and restaurants and for arranging last-minute wilderness trips before the short rains begin. Bring a light jacket for early mornings and expect easier road conditions than during wet months.
Northern Highlands & Volcanoes (Musanze, Volcanoes NP)
September warms into the late dry season and the highland air becomes slightly more humid; afternoon cloud build-up increases but significant rain is still uncommon. Trekking remains straightforward and viewpoint days are frequent, offering sharp views across the Virunga range when early cloud burns off. Keep a light waterproof handy just in case and expect steady tourist numbers.
Western Lakeside (Lake Kivu - Gisenyi, Karongi, Rusizi coast)
September brings slightly warmer temperatures and a bit more cloud in the afternoons, though it remains largely dry; the end of the dry season produces some very pleasant late-summer days. Quiet coves and coffee plantations near the lake are attractive for day visits before the short rains, and ferry timetables remain steady. Pack lightweight clothing and a waterproof just in case.
Southern Highlands & Nyungwe Forest (Huye/Butare, Nyungwe)
September warms slightly and the forest can see more afternoon cloud formation, though significant rainfall is still limited; primate activity remains high and trails stay walkable. This month offers a nice balance of comfortable weather and fewer mechanical issues on rural roads. Bring a light rain layer for unexpected showers and enjoy quieter lodges than in December.
Eastern Lowlands & Akagera (Akagera NP, Kayonza, Eastern plains)
September warms into the late dry season and the landscape begins to brown, but game remains concentrated around permanent water sources for excellent sightings. Roads are dry and dusty - bring a bandana or scarf to filter dust during open-vehicle transfers. Plan early starts, lots of water and a hat for shade.
