Kigali & Central Plateau
April is often the wettest month here, with repeated downpours that cool afternoons and fill the drainage channels; the city smells of wet earth and flowering jacarandas. Flooding is uncommon in the heart of Kigali but low-lying roads and some rural routes can become slow or impassable, affecting day trips to nearby coffee farms. Travelers should schedule flexible plans, carry an umbrella and sturdy shoes, and enjoy lower hotel rates and verdant countryside views.
Northern Highlands & Volcanoes (Musanze, Volcanoes NP)
April is usually the wettest month in the northern highlands, with persistent mist and regular heavy showers that swell small streams and can make steep slopes treacherous. Trekking groups still operate but expect slow, muddy ascents and colder, damp conditions; the forested slopes feel alive and lush if you don’t mind the wet. Choose sturdy footwear, layered rainproof clothing, and be prepared for last-minute itinerary changes.
Western Lakeside (Lake Kivu - Gisenyi, Karongi, Rusizi coast)
April can be wet and humid beside the lake with dramatic cloud build-up that dumps heavy midday storms - some smaller boat services reduce frequency and remote islands may be harder to reach. The scenery is lush and dramatic, but expect muddy paths at resorts and limited outdoor dining options during heavy rain. Bring solid waterproof footwear, a good poncho and patience for weather delays.
Southern Highlands & Nyungwe Forest (Huye/Butare, Nyungwe)
April is typically the wettest month in Nyungwe, with persistent rain that makes forest trails boggy and river crossings more challenging; some remote trails may be closed after heavy storms. The rainforest’s waterfalls are at their fullest and photography is dramatic if you don’t mind wet conditions. Bring heavy-duty waterproofs, quick-drying layers and be prepared for itinerary changes.
Eastern Lowlands & Akagera (Akagera NP, Kayonza, Eastern plains)
April is typically very wet in the eastern plains; rivers and floodplains in Akagera enlarge and boat safaris on Lake Ihema become more productive for waterbirds but waterlogged tracks can restrict 4x4 access. The park turns lush and mosquitoes increase with the standing water, so malaria precautions are important. Expect fewer visitors and dramatic wetland scenes - bring repellents and waterproof gear.
