Kigali & Central Plateau

August keeps the cool dry weather and is still excellent for outside activities; late afternoons often have a pleasant breeze thanks to the higher elevation. Domestic travel peaks as Rwandans take holidays, so expect busier routes to lakeside towns and national parks on weekends. Reserve accommodation early if you plan to travel out of Kigali, and pack lightweight layers for warmth after sunset.

Northern Highlands & Volcanoes (Musanze, Volcanoes NP)

August keeps the clear skies and cool temperatures, though daytime highs climb a little; evenings remain distinctly cooler than the lowlands. This is peak season for northern park activities, so expect lively lodges and full trek rosters. Bring comfortable hiking layers, good boots, and reserve gorilla permits early.

Western Lakeside (Lake Kivu - Gisenyi, Karongi, Rusizi coast)

August keeps the clear, calm conditions - an ideal month for long boat trips to lesser-visited lakeside villages and for hiking short coastal tracks. Tourist amenities operate at full capacity and inter-lake minibuses run reliably. Bring sun protection and a layer for breezier mornings; weekend crowds at popular beaches can be noticeable.

Southern Highlands & Nyungwe Forest (Huye/Butare, Nyungwe)

August maintains dry, pleasant weather ideal for extended hikes across the Nyungwe massif and visits to tea fields near Butare. Days are generally sunny and evenings cool; scenic drives across the southern highlands are reliable and comfortable. Expect increased bookings from international visitors and carry sun protection for open stretches on tea estate walks.

Eastern Lowlands & Akagera (Akagera NP, Kayonza, Eastern plains)

August keeps dry, hot days and is one of the best months for sustained wildlife viewing with open savanna and strong photographic light. Expect greater numbers of visitors during peak safari season, so book vehicle slots and guides ahead. Pack breathable clothing for daytime, a warm fleece for mornings and sunblock for midday heat.
