Kigali & Central Plateau

October brings the short rains: showers are less predictable, often arriving as intense bursts that can muddy rural tracks and make forest trails slick. Urban activities continue largely unaffected, but day trips to Nyungwe or the Volcanoes become more dependent on weather; gorilla treks remain possible but can be muddier. Carry waterproof footwear and a poncho, and remain flexible with inter-regional transfers.

Northern Highlands & Volcanoes (Musanze, Volcanoes NP)

October introduces the short rains and more frequent low cloud over the volcanoes, which can cut visibility on crater rim walks and make trails muddy again. Gorilla treks are still conducted but can feel wetter and cooler; plan for slower walking conditions and potential trail closures after heavy storms. Waterproof gear, gaiters and sturdy poles are recommended.

Western Lakeside (Lake Kivu - Gisenyi, Karongi, Rusizi coast)

October introduces the short rains with occasional heavy showers that can interrupt boat services and make paddling on exposed parts of the lake choppy. Lakeside trails become slick and some island accommodations post limited activity during prolonged wet spells, though mornings may still be fine for excursions. Carry a good-stage raincoat, dry bags for electronics and allow buffer time for water transfers.

Southern Highlands & Nyungwe Forest (Huye/Butare, Nyungwe)

October brings the short rains and more frequent wet spells in the southern highlands; Nyungwe’s forest canopy catches most of the moisture, making morning treks damp and occasionally foggy. Lodge staff sometimes adjust activity schedules around showers, but many guided walks continue. Pack waterproof backpacks, gaiters and manage expectations for muddy undergrowth.

Eastern Lowlands & Akagera (Akagera NP, Kayonza, Eastern plains)

October begins the short rainy season and thunderstorms become more common, bringing brief cooling rains that green the plains but can make some sandy tracks soft. Boat trips on Lake Ihema may be affected by sudden wind squalls, but the first rains trigger lush growth and fresh wildlife activity. Carry waterproofs and flexible plans for safari timing.
