Kigali & Central Plateau

March begins the long rains in parts of the Central Plateau, with showers becoming frequent by mid-month - they usually fall as heavy afternoon storms rather than all-day drizzle. Those storms can cause urban puddles and occasional short traffic delays, though museum visits, restaurants and Kigali’s hilltop viewpoints remain accessible; gorilla permits booked from Kigali may encounter muddier trail approaches further north. Pack a waterproof jacket, quick-dry clothing and waterproof shoes; expect fewer international tourists than in the dry months.

Northern Highlands & Volcanoes (Musanze, Volcanoes NP)

March marks the start of the long rains; cloud and drizzle become frequent at high elevations, turning trails muddy and slippery on Mount Bisoke and Karisimbi. Visibility for mountain panoramas is reduced and some higher huts or routes might be less pleasant; gorilla treks continue but can be taxing. Pack waterproof hiking gear, gaiters and trekking poles and plan extra time for muddy transfers.

Western Lakeside (Lake Kivu - Gisenyi, Karongi, Rusizi coast)

March brings the start of the long rains and you’ll notice heavier, more frequent downpours that can make the dirt roads around smaller landing sites sticky. Water excursions continue but with a greater chance of interrupted sailings during storms; lakeside waterfalls and rivers swell and look dramatic. Waterproof your luggage and plan flexible lake transfers if you’re catching ferries or small boats.

Southern Highlands & Nyungwe Forest (Huye/Butare, Nyungwe)

March signals the start of the long rainy season and Nyungwe becomes consistently wet - days can alternate between heavy tropical showers and low cloud. Chimp and colobus sightings continue but expect slippery trails and more strenuous treks; the canopy walkway can be enveloped in mist. Plan for slower travel, carry a robust rain shell and allow extra time between destinations.

Eastern Lowlands & Akagera (Akagera NP, Kayonza, Eastern plains)

March introduces the long rains in the east and heavy showers begin to refill pans and wetlands in Akagera; afternoon storms are common and some dirt tracks become softer. Birdlife surges and migratory visitors may arrive with the rains, but safari comfort decreases as puddles increase and some remote lodges might reduce vehicle access. Carry a waterproof layer and plan slightly slower safari days.
