Kigali & Central Plateau
May still carries frequent rains, but showers start to thin toward the end of the month as the wet season winds down; humidity remains high and mornings can be misty on the surrounding hills. The city is lush and traffic calmer than usual, which makes it a fine time to explore Kigali’s neighborhoods and sample street food under cover. Bring mosquito repellent for evenings and expect some mud on rural trails.
Northern Highlands & Volcanoes (Musanze, Volcanoes NP)
May sees rains taper off slowly, leaving saturated soils and swollen waterfalls - the landscape is vividly green and there are fewer tourists on the trails. The Volcanoes remain accessible, though lower cloud bases in mornings can hide distant views; gorilla trekking conditions improve gradually as paths dry. Bring a warm mid-layer, waterproofs and insect repellent as humidity remains elevated.
Western Lakeside (Lake Kivu - Gisenyi, Karongi, Rusizi coast)
May sees rain easing late in the month and the lake’s water level remains high; mornings can be misty with late, bright afternoons ideal for kayaking near Kibuye (Karongi). Accommodation prices tend to be lower than in peak months, so this is a quiet time to explore shoreline villages. Pack layers for cooler mornings and a reliable rain jacket for unexpected showers.
Southern Highlands & Nyungwe Forest (Huye/Butare, Nyungwe)
May sees rains easing late in the month, leaving the forest saturated and brilliantly green; trails begin to firm and wildlife activity increases as the understory regenerates. Birdwatchers and botanists appreciate the renewed growth and fewer tourists on the paths. Carry a warm layer for morning starts and waterproof boots for residual mud.
Eastern Lowlands & Akagera (Akagera NP, Kayonza, Eastern plains)
May sees rains tapering late in the month and the park becomes vibrant as grasslands recover; some routes reopen as soils firm, while birdlife remains abundant. This shoulder-time offers quieter wildlife experiences before the dry season returns, with cooler daytime temperatures than the peak dry months. Pack layers for cool mornings, waterproofs for residual showers and a zoom lens for intensified bird activity.
