Kigali & Central Plateau

June ushers in the cooler, drier season - mornings are crisp and clear with daytime highs in the low to mid-20s°C and pleasant evenings ideal for rooftop bars. This is the start of the prime window for regional travel; gorilla and chimp tracks are drier and more predictable, so tours run reliably. Pack a warmer layer for nights and a rain shell for unexpected squalls; expect more international tourists arriving and higher prices than in the long rains.

Northern Highlands & Volcanoes (Musanze, Volcanoes NP)

June ushers in the drier, cooler half of the year: mornings are clear and brisk with improved visibility for mountain vistas and volcano crater rim walks. This is one of the best stretches for gorilla permits and for climbing Karisimbi if you want a long, chilly ascent; nights are cold enough for a fleece. Book well in advance - demand is high and lodges near the park fill quickly.

Western Lakeside (Lake Kivu - Gisenyi, Karongi, Rusizi coast)

June opens the drier, clearer season: calm lake surfaces, better boat reliability and more predictable road travel from Kigali make this an excellent time for island visits. Warm days and cool nights make evening meals on terraces pleasant, while sunrise over the Rwandan shoreline is crisp. Expect increased bookings from domestic tourists at weekends - reserve ahead for popular lakeside lodges.

Southern Highlands & Nyungwe Forest (Huye/Butare, Nyungwe)

June brings drier, cooler conditions to the south; Nyungwe trails are in good shape and canopy walks offer clear views for much of the day. This is a favored window for trekking and wildlife tours before the short rains arrive, with comfortable lodge conditions and reliable access. Pack layers for cool mornings and expect greater availability at accommodations.

Eastern Lowlands & Akagera (Akagera NP, Kayonza, Eastern plains)

June opens the drier season and game viewing becomes optimal as water concentrates in fewer pans and animals gather predictably; dawn safaris are crisp and pleasant. Roads inside Akagera are generally firm and reliable, so longer drives and boat trips operate on schedule. Bring warm layers for morning drives and insect repellent for sundowner periods.
