Kigali & Central Plateau
February continues the dry, relatively warm run and is one of the sunniest months in the capital. Streets are dusty where construction is active around downtown and traffic is noticeably easier than in the rainy season, so this is a good time for out-of-city day trips to Nyanza and the King’s Palace without worrying about slippery tracks. Bring sunscreen and a light jacket for early mornings; hotels generally fill with regional business travelers.
Northern Highlands & Volcanoes (Musanze, Volcanoes NP)
February stays relatively dry and is often slightly warmer than January, making high-altitude trekking more straightforward and views from viewpoints such as the Twin Lakes clearer. Early starts still demand warm clothing: frost is uncommon but temperatures on the ridges can drop significantly. Tourism picks up, so expect busy ranger briefings and full permits for gorilla treks.
Western Lakeside (Lake Kivu - Gisenyi, Karongi, Rusizi coast)
February keeps the lake warm and mostly settled; late afternoons are excellent for boat cruises and watching fishing canoes come in at sunset. Water visibility is generally good and towns like Gisenyi bustle with both local and foreign visitors - expect restaurants and hotels to be active. Bring light breathable clothing and a sweater for breezy evenings on open water.
Southern Highlands & Nyungwe Forest (Huye/Butare, Nyungwe)
February remains favorable for Nyungwe’s primates and the famous canopy walkway - humidity is noticeable but the forest is less sodden than in March and April. Trails can still be muddy in places, so guided walks are recommended and visibility in the forest understory is often excellent. Bring gaiters, a rain jacket and binoculars for birdwatching; accommodations around Huye fill with nature travelers.
Eastern Lowlands & Akagera (Akagera NP, Kayonza, Eastern plains)
February continues the dry, hot spell across Akagera and surrounding plains; grass is brown and waterholes draw concentrated wildlife, making game-viewing especially good. Roads inside the park are dustier but largely passable; small camps fill with tourists wanting clear-sky photography. Bring light breathable clothing, strong sun protection and mosquito repellent for dusk drives.
