Kigali & Central Plateau

November intensifies the short rainy period before the long dry season returns; humid, warm days alternate with heavy afternoon thunderstorms that can last into the evening. Flights and buses occasionally run late if thunderstorms are severe, so add buffer time for connections when moving between Kigali and park gateways. Pack quick-dry layers, a good umbrella and allow for slower travel times.

Northern Highlands & Volcanoes (Musanze, Volcanoes NP)

November often brings a wetter pattern with spells of steady rain and persistent fog in the high forests; mornings can be bleak and wet under the canopy. Trail footing is unpredictable and ranger teams sometimes adjust timings to avoid the worst of the downpours. Travel with flexible plans, robust rain gear and expect fewer other trekkers on the trails.

Western Lakeside (Lake Kivu - Gisenyi, Karongi, Rusizi coast)

November often brings frequent cloudbursts and windier afternoons that roughen the water; small ferries sometimes delay journeys during squalls. The shoreline looks gloriously green where waterfalls spill into the lake, but plan few long crossings and expect staff at some tourist services to be reduced. Pack waterproof footwear, quick-dry clothes and accept flexible plans.

Southern Highlands & Nyungwe Forest (Huye/Butare, Nyungwe)

November is often wet and misty as the short rains persist; the forest feels cooler and insect activity can increase around lodges and camps. November often brings continued short rains and the park becomes increasingly verdant, with many mammals calving as vegetation returns; occasional storms can still interrupt safari days. Birdwatching is excellent with many migratory and resident species active in the replenished wetlands. Pack rain gear, mosquito protection and be prepared for occasional delays on dirt roads.
