Who's Bandar Lampung For?

Couples

Bandar Lampung has low-key romantic options: sunset at Siger Statue and quiet seafood dinners in Teluk Betung. Cozy midrange hotels near Tanjung Karang make for intimate stays. Day trips to Pahawang Island add snorkeling picnics for couples.

Families

Families find easy attractions: Lembah Hijau adventure park and the beach at Teluk Betung are kid-friendly. Short boat trips to Pahawang Island offer shallow snorkeling. Expect affordable family rooms and simple menus; some attractions require a 30-90 minute drive.

Backpackers

Not a major backpacker hub, but cheap homestays and guesthouses cluster around Tanjung Karang and Teluk Betung. Bus and ferry connections are reliable for island-hopping to Pahawang or Bakauheni. Expect Rp50k-200k dorm/room rates and scarce hostel common spaces.

Digital Nomads

Internet is decent in hotels and cafés but true coworking spaces are rare in Bandar Lampung. Radin Inten II airport makes travel easy, but power outages and patchy high-speed options can interrupt work. Cost of living is low for longer stays.

Foodies

Food lovers will enjoy fresh seafood stalls in Teluk Betung and spicy Lampung specialties like seruit and tempoyak. Night markets and Lampung Walk serve cheap plates under Rp20k-50k. Expect few high-end restaurants but excellent local, rustic flavors.

Adventure Seekers

Great base for active trips: dolphin watching at Kiluan Bay, snorkeling and island-hopping around Pahawang, and surf breaks near Krui (a multi-hour drive). Way Kambas offers wildlife safaris for elephant encounters. Bring a driver and local guides for remote spots.

Party Animals

Nightlife is modest - a handful of bars and hotel live-music nights in Tanjung Karang and Rajabasa. No large club scene or 24-hour party districts. Weekend festivals pop up occasionally, but expect early closing times and low international crowds.

Nature Buffs

Nature fans get access to diverse ecosystems: mangroves and beaches on the south coast, coral reefs at Pahawang, dolphin-rich Kiluan Bay, and lowland rainforest at Way Kambas. Birding and small-boat trips are common; travel times vary from 1-4 hours.

How to Get to Bandar Lampung

Bandar Lampung is served by Radin Inten II International Airport (TKG) for air arrivals; overland travellers usually arrive by intercity bus at Terminal Rajabasa or via the Merak-Bakauheni ferry route from Java. Expect to combine ferry, bus/minivan or ride-hailing depending on your origin - ride-hailing and shuttles are the most convenient for last-mile trips into the city.

By Air

Radin Inten II International Airport (TKG): The airport is about 20-30 km from central Bandar Lampung. From the terminal you can take ride-hailing (Gojek/Grab) to downtown Bandar Lampung in roughly 30-45 minutes for about IDR 30,000-80,000 depending on traffic and vehicle type. Metered taxis (Bluebird and others) take the same 30-45 minutes but typically cost IDR 80,000-150,000; shared airport minivan/shuttle services and private transfers are also common (IDR 50,000-150,000, 30-60 minutes) and useful if you have luggage.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no direct long-distance passenger rail into Bandar Lampung itself; if arriving from Java many travellers take trains to Merak (western Java) and then cross the Sunda Strait by ferry to Bakauheni (Sumatra). The ferry crossing usually takes around 2-3 hours; foot-passenger fares are commonly in the IDR 15,000-40,000 range. From Bakauheni you continue by bus or minivan to Bandar Lampung (about 2-3 hours, see bus paragraph).

Bus: Long-distance buses arrive at Terminal Rajabasa (Bandar Lampung). Buses from Jakarta and other major cities typically take 9-12 hours including the Merak-Bakauheni ferry crossing; fares for Jakarta-Bandar Lampung are commonly around IDR 150,000-400,000 depending on class and operator. From Bakauheni ferry terminal there are frequent minibuses/shuttles and regular buses to Rajabasa costing roughly IDR 30,000-70,000 and taking about 2-3 hours.

How to Get Around Bandar Lampung

Bandar Lampung is easiest to navigate by ride-hailing (Gojek/Grab) and motorbike taxis for short hops; these are reliable, inexpensive and save time in traffic. For longer trips and intercity travel use buses or shuttle vans from Terminal Rajabasa or from Bakauheni ferry - angkot and walking are cheap options locally but less convenient for tourists.

Unique & Cool Hotels

Bandar Lampung's unique stays range from practical resort hotels with pools to compact local guesthouses. Boutique and chain options cluster near main roads and the port, convenient for short visits.

Where to Eat in Bandar Lampung #

Bandar Lampung’s food scene is low-key and very much about markets, roadside warungs and grilled-fish stalls. The city’s signature is seruit - whole grilled fish served with fiery sambal (often with tempoyak, fermented durian) - and simple pindang or ikan bakar plates that locals demolish with steamed rice. You’ll find the best versions at evening stalls along main arteries like Jalan Raden Intan and around traditional markets such as Pasar Bambu Kuning.

Expect an honest, unfussy food culture: fresh seafood, fried snacks like kemplang, and plenty of sambal. For non-local cravings there are national chains and family-run Chinese and Western restaurants clustered near malls (Boemi Kedaton and main shopping streets). Vegetarians do fine with market nasi campur stalls (tempe, tahu, sayur) and a few cafés near the malls for salads and coffee.

Local Food
Lampung's comfort food centers on grilled fish (seruit), pindang and tempoyak-based dishes - best eaten at market stalls and humble warungs.
  • Street stalls along Jalan Raden Intan - Seruit and grilled fish with sambal; evening crowd.
  • Pasar Bambu Kuning vendors - Fresh kemplang, ikan pindang, local snacks.
  • Warung Seruit dekat Pelabuhan Panjang - Simple grilled fish plates with sambal tempoyak.
International Food
For non-local options you'll mostly find national chains and family-run Chinese and Western-style restaurants clustered near malls and main roads.
  • KFC (various outlets) - Reliable fried chicken and quick meals.
  • Pizza Hut (mall branches) - Familiar Western-style pizza for groups.
  • Local Chinese restaurants around Jalan Sultan Agung - Noodle dishes and stir-fries popular with families.
Vegetarian

  • Warung sayur pasar pagi - Fresh vegetable stir-fries and tofu-based dishes.
  • Simple vegetarian stalls in Pasar Bambu Kuning - Rice plates with tempe, tofu, and sambals.

Shopping in Bandar Lampung #

Bandar Lampung’s shopping scene mixes pragmatic malls with lively traditional markets. The city is best known for tapis (Lampung’s handwoven cloth), strong local coffee and fresh seafood - you’ll find tapis at both specialized galleries and market stalls, and coffee roasters selling single-origin beans around town. Malls like Transmart and Boemi Kedaton make for easy, air-conditioned shopping and accept cards; markets are cash-first and much more negotiable.

Bargaining is expected in markets (start by offering about half the first price and work up), but avoid haggling in malls and fixed-price souvenir shops. Inspect tapis closely: look at the weave, colors and finishing rather than the seller’s story. Practical tips: carry small bills for markets, go early to wet markets for the best selection, use Gojek/Grab for short trips, and avoid rush-hour traffic. If you want authentic handwork, seek out weaving cooperatives or galleries rather than cheap mass-produced imitations - you’ll pay more, but get a piece that lasts.

Shopping Malls
Modern malls are the easiest place for fixed prices, air conditioning and card payments. Expect familiar chain stores alongside small local brands.
  • Transmart Lampung - Huge complex with supermarket, cinema, and outlets.
  • Boemi Kedaton Mall - Popular local mall with fashion and dining.
  • Central Plaza Lampung - Older covered mall, everyday stores and services.
  • Lampung Walk - Outdoor food promenade popular in evenings.
Markets & Bazaars
For real bargains and local character head to the wet markets and Pasar Bawah; this is where textiles, spices and snacks are cheapest but expect to haggle.
  • Pasar Bawah - Historic wholesale market for spices, textiles, souvenirs.
  • Pasar Way Halim - Busy neighborhood market for fresh produce and goods.
  • Pasar Sukarame - Traditional market serving local communities, bargain-friendly.
  • Pusat Oleh-Oleh Lampung - Row of souvenir shops selling tapis and snacks.
Local & Artisan
Bandar Lampung is best known for tapis (traditional woven cloth) and local coffee; buy directly from makers where possible to support artisans and check quality.
  • Galeri Tapis Lampung - Dedicated gallery showcasing traditional tapis weaving.
  • Tapis weaving villages - Weavers around Bandar Lampung selling handwoven cloth.
  • Lampung coffee roasters - Small roasters selling locally grown Lampung coffee.
  • Kedaton craft stalls - Silver, woodcraft and small artisan stalls in Kedaton.
Fashion & Boutiques
If you want tailored clothes or local-label pieces, use the tailors near markets or browse independent boutiques along Raden Intan for unique finds.
  • Boutiques in Boemi Kedaton Mall - Local designers and chain stores inside mall.
  • Independent shops on Jalan Raden Intan - Small boutiques and tailors catering to local tastes.
  • Tailors near Pasar Bawah - Bespoke tailors who alter and custom-make clothing.
  • Fashion outlets in Transmart - Affordable brands and seasonal promotions frequently available.

Living in Bandar Lampung #

Bandar Lampung is a mid-sized provincial capital on Sumatra with affordable long-term living options. Short stays can use the Visa on Arrival (VoA) for eligible nationals (US$35, typically 30 days, extendable once); for stays beyond tourist limits you’ll need a sponsored KITAS (work, family reunification) or a retirement KITAS for qualifying retirees. Permanent residence (KITAP) is an option after meeting multi-year requirements.

Housing ranges from inexpensive kost rooms (≈500k-1.5M IDR/month) to 1BR apartments around 2.5M-4.5M IDR/month; family homes and newer developments cost more. Healthcare is provided by Puskesmas for routine care and RSUP Dr. Abdul Moeloek for referrals and emergencies. Private clinics and pharmacies cover most outpatient needs; consider BPJS Kesehatan enrollment or private insurance for more comprehensive coverage.

Best Neighborhoods
Neighborhoods with good housing, access to services, and varying price points - pick Way Halim or Kemiling for conveniences and Teluk Betung or Tanjung Karang for lower rents.
  • Way Halim - Popular residential area, near UNILA, 1-3M IDR/mo
  • Teluk Betung - Suburban, markets and ports, 1-2.5M IDR/mo
  • Kemiling - Quiet, malls and services nearby, 2-4M IDR/mo
  • Tanjung Karang - Old town CBD, affordable, 1.5-3M IDR/mo
  • Rajabasa - Near airport, newer housing, 2.5-5M IDR/mo
Health & Wellness
Public Puskesmas handle routine care affordably; use RSUP Dr. Abdul Moeloek for specialist or emergency treatment and private clinics for quicker outpatient visits.
  • RSUP Dr. Abdul Moeloek - Provincial referral hospital, specialist care available
  • Puskesmas (local clinics) - Low-cost primary care, subsidised services
  • Private clinics & apotek - Evening clinics and 24/7 pharmacies in city centre
  • Basic dental & maternal clinics - Affordable private options, cash payments common
Cost of Living
Overall living costs are low compared with Indonesia's big cities; expect modest rents, inexpensive local food, and cheap local transport.

  • 1BR apartment (city area) - 2.5M-4.5M IDR/mo, mid-range units available
  • Local meals - Warung meals 15k-30k IDR, mid-range restaurants 40k-100k IDR

  • Utilities & internet - Electricity + water 200k-500k IDR/mo, home internet 300k+/mo

Digital Nomads in Bandar Lampung

Bandar Lampung’s digital nomad scene is small and informal - most remote workers base themselves in cafés, mall foodcourts or hotel business lounges rather than purpose-built coworking spaces. Expect residential fibre (IndiHome) in central neighbourhoods with packages from roughly 300k IDR/month and mobile 4G from Telkomsel or XL delivering practical speeds for video calls and development work (typical mobile speeds 10-40 Mbps depending on signal).

Monthly living costs for a nomad using a modest 1BR apartment, mobile data and coworking/café spending fall well below Indonesia’s big-city levels - a workable base for budget-conscious remote workers who don’t require a large co‑working community.

Coworking Spaces
Formal coworking is limited; digital nomads commonly work from malls, campus cafés, hotel lobbies, or coffee shops with reliable outlets and Wi‑Fi.
  • Mall Boemi Kedaton - Foodcourt and cafés, usable Wi‑Fi, long hours
  • Universitas Lampung (UNILA) cafés - Quiet spots near campus, daytime access possible
  • Local cafés (Way Halim & Kemiling) - Many cafés with power outlets, decent Wi‑Fi
  • Hotel lobbies & business centres - Pay-per-day seating, reliable internet, AC
Internet & Connectivity
Residential fibre (IndiHome) is available in urban areas with typical home plans from ~300k IDR/month; mobile 4G (Telkomsel, XL) delivers usable speeds for remote work, often 10-40 Mbps depending on location.
  • IndiHome (Telkom) - Fiber packages 20-100 Mbps, ~300k-800k IDR/mo
  • Telkomsel 4G - Good mobile coverage, prepaid plans 50k-150k IDR/mo
  • XL Axiata / Tri - Alternative mobile providers, competitive data bundles
  • Warnet (internet cafés) - Hourly rates 3k-10k IDR, useful backup option
Community & Networking
There isn't a large dedicated nomad scene, but you'll find networking through UNILA events, small startup meetups, and local Facebook/Telegram groups; cafés and malls are common meetup spots.
  • University of Lampung groups - Academic events, tech talks, student meetups
  • Local entrepreneur & startup meetups - Occasional networking events in the city
  • Facebook & Telegram groups - Expats, buyers/sellers, Lampung remote worker chats
