Central Uganda - Kampala, Entebbe and the Lake Victoria basin
October is generally part of the short rainy season, bringing heavier and more frequent showers that can make low-lying roads soggy and occasional urban flooding in Kampala. Entebbe’s airport usually operates normally, but small boat crossings to Ssese can be cancelled on windy days. For museum days and coffee shops the rain is no problem, but avoid remote, unpaved roads and allow extra travel time.
Lake Victoria islands & southern lakeshore (Ssese Islands, Kalangala, Masaka corridor)
October typically brings the short rains: scattered heavy showers and windier conditions on the lake that can cancel or delay local ferries. Beaches will be quieter and some camps close for maintenance; if you need reliable crossings, check local marine notices or choose larger operator services. On dry interludes, the handle of a boat or a day under an umbrella still makes for an enjoyable visit.
Eastern Uganda & Mt. Elgon foothills (Jinja, Mbale, Soroti corridor)
September starts to see cloud building again and occasional showers return as the region edges toward the short rainy season; rainfall may still be lighter than during the March-May peak. Sipi Falls remains scenic, but river activities can be more variable and local streams can surge suddenly. Travelers should keep the raincoat ready and avoid crossing swollen streams on foot.
Western Highlands & Rwenzori massif (Fort Portal, Kasese, Bundibugyo)
September begins to show more afternoon cloud and isolated showers as the short rains approach, though many days remain fine for outdoor activities. Trails can start to soften again, so consider timing higher-altitude routes earlier in the day. Travelers will notice fewer crowds than mid-year but should allow contingency time for rain-delayed transport.
Southwest parks & gorilla country (Bwindi, Mgahinga, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Edward area)
September often sees a gradual return of humidity and scattered showers as the short rains approach; the savanna becomes greener and some roads begin to soften. Gorilla trekkers will still find good conditions, but afternoon storms can begin to interrupt longer road transfers. Keep a rain layer handy and allow a buffer day for inter-park travel.
Northern plains & Karamoja (Gulu, Lira, Moroto, Kotido, West Nile fringe)
September begins to show building humidity and more frequent thunderstorms in the northern corridor as the rains start to return, but many areas still experience long dry spells. Karamoja’s grazing areas may be recovering or starting to dry depending on seasonal variability, so road conditions can vary dramatically over short distances. Keep flexible itineraries and consider hiring local drivers familiar with seasonal routes.
