Uganda in July: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Central Uganda - Kampala, Entebbe and the Lake Victoria basin

August often stays dry and pleasant; Kampala’s tree-lined streets provide shade from midday heat, and Entebbe’s lakeshore is agreeable for early morning birding on calm waters. This month remains popular with tourists - gorilla permits and safari slots in nearby parks are in demand, so book activities early. Afternoon cloud can still produce brief showers near the lake; a compact rain jacket will see you through short downpours.

Lake Victoria islands & southern lakeshore (Ssese Islands, Kalangala, Masaka corridor)

August remains comfortable and breezy, often regarded as one of the best months for visiting the Ssese Islands - calm mornings, clear afternoons and minimal downpours. This is a peak travel window for families and groups, so small guesthouses may have limited availability. Bring trekking shoes for shoreline trails and expect lively markets in Masaka and Kalangala town.

Eastern Uganda & Mt. Elgon foothills (Jinja, Mbale, Soroti corridor)

July remains a good month for outdoor activity: daytime warmth is comfortable and rainfall minimal, giving better visibility from Elgon’s ridges and more stable river conditions at Jinja. Local cultural sites and market visits are straightforward with improved road conditions. Evenings can be notably cool in higher altitude towns like Mbale - a sweater is useful.

Western Highlands & Rwenzori massif (Fort Portal, Kasese, Bundibugyo)

July continues the drier, cool spell with stable conditions for longer hikes and wildlife viewing in places like Semuliki and Queen Elizabeth (western fringes). Cold nights at altitude are common; a warm sleeping bag or extra layers are essential for mountain camps. Expect increased bookings for treks and fewer problems with track passability than during the rainy peaks.

Southwest parks & gorilla country (Bwindi, Mgahinga, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Edward area)

July stays cool and relatively dry with clear conditions for both gorilla tracking and boat safaris; daylight hours are comfortable for full-day game drives in Queen Elizabeth. The forest canopy is less misty and trails are far easier to negotiate, making these months a preferred time for many wildlife travelers. Bring warm layers for early starts and evenings, and reserve guides and vehicles early.

Northern plains & Karamoja (Gulu, Lira, Moroto, Kotido, West Nile fringe)

July generally remains drier and cooler with less chance of heavy rains, offering firm roads and easier access to cultural sites, parks and markets across the north. This is a favourable month for long-distance drives and mobile safaris, though daytime temperatures still rise and shade is scarce in open terrain. Pack plenty of water, sun-proof clothing and a hat for daytime excursions.
