Central Uganda - Kampala, Entebbe and the Lake Victoria basin
July maintains the dry, mild spell across the Central basin, with daytime heat tempered by breezes off Lake Victoria and cooler nights that make sleeping comfortable without air conditioning. The clear air improves views of the lake and islands, and traffic is more reliable for day trips to Mpala or the Mabira Forest. Pack a light sweater for evenings and expect busier hotels, especially around national holidays and school breaks.
Lake Victoria islands & southern lakeshore (Ssese Islands, Kalangala, Masaka corridor)
July continues with stable, relatively dry weather and good conditions for watersports and fishing trips around Kalangala; evening temperatures drop enough for a light sweater. The lack of heavy rain makes unpaved roads accessible, which helps visits to nearby Masaka and wetlands. Keep sunscreen and a hat for the strong sun, and book boat transfers ahead of time during weekends and holidays.
Eastern Uganda & Mt. Elgon foothills (Jinja, Mbale, Soroti corridor)
June generally marks a drier, cooler interlude across the eastern plains and the Elgon foothills, with crisper mornings and afternoons that clear up for hiking. This is a popular month for trekking on lower Elgon routes because trails firm up, offering a safer ascent to places like the Elgon caves and Sipi lookout points. Book guides in advance, and bring warm layers for elevated campsites and early starts.
Western Highlands & Rwenzori massif (Fort Portal, Kasese, Bundibugyo)
June brings a break in the rains: clear mornings, cooler days and firmer trails make this one of the best months for serious trekking and exploring national parks in the west. Visibility from Rwenzori foothills improves, and crater lakes and tea plantations show crisp colors under blue skies. This is high season for outdoorsy visitors - reserve mountain huts and guides in advance and carry warm clothing for cold nights.
Southwest parks & gorilla country (Bwindi, Mgahinga, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Edward area)
June usually brings a drier, cooler spell that firms up forest trails and improves road access to park lodges - an excellent window for gorilla trekking and wildlife drives. Early mornings are crisp and birding is rewarding as forest species are active after the rains. As this is a favored season for visitors, permit availability tightens; book months ahead if you plan gorilla permits in Bwindi or Mgahinga.
Northern plains & Karamoja (Gulu, Lira, Moroto, Kotido, West Nile fringe)
June brings a drier, cooler interval relative to the rainy peak; mornings are fresh and days remain warm, making it a suitable window for overland travel and visits to regional markets. In Karamoja some rivers recede, improving access to certain remote areas while others stay waterlogged; plan local connections with trusted operators. Bring layers for cooler nights and a light rain layer for isolated showers.
