December’s weather is more settled with less persistent rain, offering warm days and cooler nights especially in the Elgon highlands, making it a pleasant month for both river activities and hill walks. Local holiday traffic increases toward the end of the month, particularly routes from Jinja to Mbale, so book transport ahead. Bring layers for mornings on the mountain and a light rain layer for isolated squalls.

Western Highlands & Rwenzori massif (Fort Portal, Kasese, Bundibugyo)

December moves toward drier, milder conditions with clearer mornings and cooler nights, though the highlands keep an unpredictable cloud cover that can produce sudden showers. This is a good month for lower-elevation hikes, crater-lake visits and cultural stops around Fort Portal; for high-altitude Rwenzori routes, book carefully and be ready for rapidly changing conditions. Layering and waterproofs remain essential.

Southwest parks & gorilla country (Bwindi, Mgahinga, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Edward area)

December tends toward a drier, more settled time though isolated showers can occur; the parks receive more visitors around the holidays and lodge rates often rise. Trails are generally navigable and boat safaris are comfortable with cooler mornings and warm afternoons. Plan ahead for holiday travel and bring layered clothing for the range between cool mornings and hot mid-days.
