Central Uganda - Kampala, Entebbe and the Lake Victoria basin
Early in the year the air around Kampala and Entebbe is warm and humid, with temperatures that feel close to year-round subtropical. January is often one of the drier months after the short rains have finished; Lake Victoria’s mornings are misty and the city smells of flowering jacaranda. Travelers find roads easier to negotiate and outdoor cafés pleasant, but still pack a light rain jacket for occasional afternoon downpours and mosquito repellent for dusk along the lakeshore.
Lake Victoria islands & southern lakeshore (Ssese Islands, Kalangala, Masaka corridor)
A still, humid atmosphere often greets visitors on the Ssese Islands in January, with warm sea-scented breezes and easy boat access between islands. Many lodges are quieter after the holiday rush and beaches like Bugala Island’s sandy strips are pleasant for swimming; watch for the odd passing shower that clears quickly. Pack reef-safe sunscreen and a light waterproof for sudden squalls that can whip up on the lake.
Eastern Uganda & Mt. Elgon foothills (Jinja, Mbale, Soroti corridor)
Late dry-season heat is common in January across the lowlands near Jinja and Mbale, with mornings on the Nile pleasantly cool and afternoons humid. River-based activities around Jinja (including rafting and launches) are popular; however, short, sharp storms can still interrupt plans. Bring lightweight clothing, sun protection and an extra day in your itinerary for possible water-level or transport changes.
Western Highlands & Rwenzori massif (Fort Portal, Kasese, Bundibugyo)
A cool, misty atmosphere often lingers in the highlands during January, with Fort Portal and the tea estates feeling refreshingly mild compared to the lowlands. The Rwenzori foothills can be foggy in the mornings, clearing to show dramatic cloud-shrouded ridges; gorilla- and chimp-tracking areas nearby are accessible, though higher trails remain damp. Bring warm layers for early starts, and waterproofs - the highlands can produce sudden showers even when the valleys are dry.
Southwest parks & gorilla country (Bwindi, Mgahinga, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Edward area)
January is warm in the lowlands of Queen Elizabeth but mornings in gorilla country are cool and often misty, especially in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Trails are generally passable and gorilla trekking runs year-round; early bookings are wise as lodges can fill during holiday weeks. Bring sturdy, waterproof trekking boots and a lightweight rain jacket - rains are less frequent but the forest canopy traps humidity.
Northern plains & Karamoja (Gulu, Lira, Moroto, Kotido, West Nile fringe)
January is hot and dry across the northern plains and Karamoja, with dusty roads and clear skies from Gulu to Moroto; early mornings can be pleasantly cool. This is prime time for overland travel and cultural visits as tracks are firm, but daytime heat builds quickly so hydrate and travel in the cooler hours. Some remote services may be limited, so carry cash and fuel supplies for long drives.
