Central Uganda - Kampala, Entebbe and the Lake Victoria basin
Mid-year brings a welcome break: June usually delivers the coolest, driest weeks of the year here, with crisp mornings and clearer skies over Kampala and Entebbe. This is an excellent month for walking around the city, visiting the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre or taking boat trips on the lake - water levels are steady and mosquitoes slightly less aggressive. Bookings rise as international visitors arrive, so if you want quieter lodging, plan ahead.
Lake Victoria islands & southern lakeshore (Ssese Islands, Kalangala, Masaka corridor)
By June the island chains settle into the cooler, drier season that runs through August; mornings are crisp and afternoons pleasantly warm with steady breezes off the lake. Water visibility for snorkeling can improve and boat crossings are more reliable, making this an excellent window for island-hopping. Expect more domestic tourists in school holiday periods - reserve transport and lodgings in advance.
Eastern Uganda & Mt. Elgon foothills (Jinja, Mbale, Soroti corridor)
May often keeps the landscape lush and wet; lower-lying plains around Soroti and Busoga can be waterlogged after sustained rains, affecting access to rural homestays. The benefits are seasonal waterfalls and greener coffee plantations around Mbale - a pleasure for coffee-farm visits if you don’t mind the wet conditions. Pack quick-dry clothing and plan for longer transfer times between sights.
Western Highlands & Rwenzori massif (Fort Portal, Kasese, Bundibugyo)
May often keeps the highlands saturated and cool, with low cloud and heavy showers common; this is off-peak for alpine trekking but birding and hot-spring visits can still be rewarding. Road travel between Kasese, Fort Portal and Bundibugyo may be slow on unpaved sections; bring spare clothes, waterproof bags and patience. The dramatic waterfalls in the region are at strong flow if you don’t mind the mud.
Southwest parks & gorilla country (Bwindi, Mgahinga, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Edward area)
May remains very green and wet in this region, with dramatic waterfalls and saturated forest floors; the trails are at their slipperiest. This is low season for visitors, so you may find better lodge rates and less competition for permits, but services to remote camps may be limited. Good wet-weather trekking gear, experienced guides and contingency days are essential.
Northern plains & Karamoja (Gulu, Lira, Moroto, Kotido, West Nile fringe)
May sees steady rainfall across parts of the north, improving grazing but making many seasonal tracks challenging for standard vehicles; 4x4 transport becomes more important for remote exploration. Birdlife and vegetation are abundant, and cultural tours into rural areas show a different, greener landscape than the dry months. Carry insect repellent and waterproof footwear for muddy approaches to villages or seasonal wetlands.
