Central Uganda - Kampala, Entebbe and the Lake Victoria basin

February typically brings rising humidity and an uptick in afternoon cloud build-up over Lake Victoria; showers start to be more frequent though long dry spells still occur. Entebbe’s beaches and the botanical gardens stay pleasantly warm for birdwatching, while Kampala’s late-afternoon storms can surprise with heavy rain on unpaved sections. Light layers and a compact umbrella keep you comfortable, and expect city traffic to slow when rivers of water cross low bridges.

Lake Victoria islands & southern lakeshore (Ssese Islands, Kalangala, Masaka corridor)

February’s air is heavy and often calm in the mornings, turning into brief tropical downpours by afternoon, particularly on Bugala and Koome islands. Fishing communities are active and the island dirt tracks can become slick; travellers should bring good sandals and keep plans flexible for inter-island transfers. Birding at dawn around the littoral wetlands is excellent before the mid-day humidity peaks.

Eastern Uganda & Mt. Elgon foothills (Jinja, Mbale, Soroti corridor)

February often brings a gradual build in humidity and more pronounced afternoon cloud over the Elgon slopes, with Mbale’s market life lively before the long rains. The Nile’s flow is generally stable for boat activities, and the eastern wetlands are good for birdwatching in early mornings. Travelers should pack a light rain jacket and expect occasional thunderstorms as convection increases.

Western Highlands & Rwenzori massif (Fort Portal, Kasese, Bundibugyo)

February usually stays mild in daytime with humid pockets in river valleys; clear spells allow for crater-lake views around Fort Portal and hikes on the Toro escarpment. Higher elevations on the Rwenzori begin to show more cloud build-up by afternoon, so summit attempts are better planned with a guide and flexible timing. Pack layered clothing, waterproofs and strong trekking boots for boggy highland trails.

Southwest parks & gorilla country (Bwindi, Mgahinga, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Edward area)

February brings increasing humidity and isolated storms that can make the boggy slopes of Bwindi and Mgahinga a bit slipperier by late afternoons. Game drives in Queen Elizabeth remain productive in the dryish spells between rains, and lakeshore boat trips on Lake Edward are pleasant at dawn. Expect leeches in forested areas during wet interludes; gaiters and long-sleeved clothing help.

Northern plains & Karamoja (Gulu, Lira, Moroto, Kotido, West Nile fringe)

February often intensifies the dry heat, with temperatures climbing in open plains and minimal rainfall; the landscape is dusty and waterholes shrink. Travel is straightforward on main roads but tracks into rural communities remain rough; traditional markets and festivals (when scheduled) make for rich cultural experiences. Pack sun protection, light breathable clothing and plan activities in mornings or late afternoons.
