Central Uganda - Kampala, Entebbe and the Lake Victoria basin
By April the long rainy season is in full swing: persistent cloud, regular torrential showers and brief sunny interludes characterize days around Lake Victoria. Entebbe can flood in low-lying parts; expect slower road travel and occasional cancellations on small boat services to island villages. Wildlife on nearby reserves like Mabamba is still accessible, but trekking or cycling on hinterland tracks becomes slippery-waterproof gear and flexible itineraries are essential.
Lake Victoria islands & southern lakeshore (Ssese Islands, Kalangala, Masaka corridor)
April is often the wettest month for this region: persistent showers and heavy storms can last hours and wind-driven rain sometimes disrupts small boat services. Beach days are fewer, and accommodation on smaller islands may run generators more as rain impairs solar panels - bring a headlamp. For those determined to stay, the rain brings greener landscapes, fewer people on trails, and dramatic lake skies.
Eastern Uganda & Mt. Elgon foothills (Jinja, Mbale, Soroti corridor)
April brings frequent downpours and cloud to the Elgon area, with Sipi Falls swelling to peak flow and attracting photographers despite the mud. Jinja remains busy with river tourism but expect occasional cancellations of whitewater activities when river levels spike. Travellers will want a sturdy waterproof pack cover and patience for slower road travel on routes toward Mbale and Kumi.
Western Highlands & Rwenzori massif (Fort Portal, Kasese, Bundibugyo)
April sees persistent orographic rainfall across the western ranges - waterfalls and rivers swell dramatically, and the landscape becomes intensely green. For photographers, the contrasts are striking, but the wet conditions make high passes and remote forest trails difficult and sometimes impassable. Local guides recommend against attempting long ridge walks during this month unless well equipped and experienced.
Southwest parks & gorilla country (Bwindi, Mgahinga, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Edward area)
April is often the wettest month in the southwest, with heavy, persistent rains that swell rivers and make trekking tracks challenging; gorilla permits are still valid but treks can be tougher and longer. Boat safaris on the Kazinga Channel can still be excellent for hippos and birds when conditions permit, but small roads may be impassable for a time. Carry quality waterproofs, consider shorter forest walks, and allow extra travel time between parks.
Northern plains & Karamoja (Gulu, Lira, Moroto, Kotido, West Nile fringe)
April often brings more consistent rains and the countryside revives-fields turn green and waterfalls in higher spots outside Gulu become audible - but roads can become difficult in places. The seasonal rains are valuable for pastoralists in Karamoja yet unpredictable, so community access may be intermittent after heavy downpours. Travelers should plan extra transit time and carry basic supplies when visiting remote communities.
