Western Coast & Banjul (Banjul, Serekunda, Bakau, Tanji)

The switch toward dry weather often becomes noticeable in October: shower frequency falls and sunny spells lengthen, making it a good month to return for coastal walks and boat trips near Banjul. The sand is back on the beaches and small guesthouses start to prepare for the drier season crowds; evenings are warm but more comfortable than the wet months. Travel times improve as roads dry, but expect local dirt tracks to remain soft in shaded areas for a while.

Lower River & Estuary (Kuntaur, Tanji estuary, river islands)

The creatures and people of the estuary breathe easier in October as rainfall tapers and water levels slowly drop, leaving exposed banks for birding and crab collecting. Days are warm and increasingly sunny, perfect for longer river cruises from Kuntaur as operators re-establish routes. Road access improves, though some secondary tracks will still hold residual water and mud into the month.

Central River & Janjanbureh region (Janjanbureh/Georgetown, Kuntaur hinterland)

October increasingly favors dry spells, with muddy tracks drying to hard ruts and fields beginning to brown as water drains away; Janjanbureh becomes easier to reach by road. Daytime temperatures are warm and comfortable for longer drives and cultural visits, and birdwatching remains rewarding on the exposed mudflats. Carry sunscreen and a light rain shell early in the month in case of occasional showers.

Upper River & Basse Santa Su (Basse, Sandu, far east)

October brings stronger dry spells: daytime heat returns but without the oppressive wet-season stickiness, and the landscape slowly dries to a pleasant golden look across the upper plains. Road travel becomes easier and remote villages are accessible again, making it a good month for multiday overland trips. Nights cool down noticeably; a light jacket is useful after sunset.
