Western Coast & Banjul (Banjul, Serekunda, Bakau, Tanji)

By September the rains begin to taper, though the coastal strip still sees frequent, sometimes heavy showers and humid, warm days. Beaches can be quieter, with fishermen repairing nets and small-scale drying of fish between showers; birdlife along Tanji’s salt pans is abundant as the waters fluctuate. Expect muddy tracks outside towns and sporadic ferry delays; a flexible itinerary and waterproof covers for luggage are sensible.

Lower River & Estuary (Kuntaur, Tanji estuary, river islands)

By September the worst of the flooding often recedes but the estuary is still high and muddy; boat operators begin to resume fuller schedules and communities start drying out. Markets along the river recover, and the landscape is intensely green with birds congregating on receding mudflats. Travel becomes easier day by day but expect soft tracks and occasional ferry delays after heavy showers.

Central River & Janjanbureh region (Janjanbureh/Georgetown, Kuntaur hinterland)

By September the rain eases but the land is still saturated; river levels remain high and boat operators begin to resume fuller schedules as tracks firm. Villages clean up and markets return to better timetables; it’s a lush, quietly restored countryside with fewer travelers. Bring quick-drying clothes and insect repellent - mosquitoes are still common in shaded, wet areas.

Upper River & Basse Santa Su (Basse, Sandu, far east)

September sees rainfall tapering and the countryside very green - game and bird activity are high as waters recede into predictable channels around Basse. Road conditions improve steadily and markets recover from the wettest weeks. This is an agreeable time for hiking and cultural exchanges, though mosquitoes are still present near water bodies, so carry repellent and a headlamp for evening walks.
