The Gambia in March: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Western Coast & Banjul (Banjul, Serekunda, Bakau, Tanji)

As spring arrives the coast warms noticeably and humidity begins to climb; daytime highs feel sticky by late March in Serekunda and Tanji. Streets get busier with traders and preparations for national celebrations in mid-February still echo into March. This is a good time for early-morning beach walks before the heat builds; carry sunscreen and light, breathable clothing for the midday sun.

Lower River & Estuary (Kuntaur, Tanji estuary, river islands)

Late-winter warmth in March starts to thicken the air above the estuary; daytime sun makes riverbank walks warm but still tolerable with the occasional breeze. Small fishing settlements increase daytime activity as boats go further offshore, and birding along the mangroves becomes lush with migratory species arriving. Expect hotter afternoons and pack light, breathable clothing and a hat for shoreline excursions.

Central River & Janjanbureh region (Janjanbureh/Georgetown, Kuntaur hinterland)

Spring warmth arrives in March as days lengthen and humidity edges up; the area feels hotter by afternoon but mornings remain comfortable for ferrying between riverside villages. Locals begin preparing fields for the imminent rains, and dust can make for golden, hazy sunsets over the flat savannah. Plan outdoor activities early in the day and carry water for longer drives on unpaved roads.

Upper River & Basse Santa Su (Basse, Sandu, far east)

With March the pre-rain heat increases noticeably in the Upper River region, and afternoons become hot and dry across the savannah around Sandu and Basse. Farmers prepare fields for the rains and short, dusty road journeys can feel tiring; carry extra water and avoid mid-afternoon exertion.
