Western Coast & Banjul (Banjul, Serekunda, Bakau, Tanji)

The coastal strip moves into the wet phase in June: rain comes in heavier showers and brief downpours, but Atlantic breezes can still make days feel bearable. Streets can muddle and some low-lying roads out of Banjul and Bakau become sluggish after intense pulses, so allow extra travel time. Birders and seafood lovers enjoy the season’s freshness, but evenings become muggy and insect activity surges - bring repellent and plan open-air dinners with that in mind.

Lower River & Estuary (Kuntaur, Tanji estuary, river islands)

Tidal rivers and estuary creeks swell in June as the wet season begins, and Kuntaur’s landing stages can become muddier after heavy showers - small boats still ply the channels but with more caution. Fisheries see higher activity as fishermen time catches between showers; expect occasional ferry cancellations on stormy days. Wildlife is active and green, but travel requires flexibility and waterproof footwear for riverbank trails.

Central River & Janjanbureh region (Janjanbureh/Georgetown, Kuntaur hinterland)

The central riverine zone turns very green in June as the rains start, and Janjanbureh’s riverbanks begin to show higher water; boat tours become more dramatic but some interior tracks are already softening. Heavy downpours can interrupt travel plans and markets run a bit wetter, with locals timing activities around showers. If you enjoy quieter villages and lush scenery, this is a rewarding though wetter month to visit.

Upper River & Basse Santa Su (Basse, Sandu, far east)

June marks the arrival of the rains in the Upper River, though rainfall is generally lighter here than in western Gambia; fields begin to green and the air smells of wet earth after the first heavy showers. Some minor tracks turn soft and rural market timetables adjust to wetter conditions, but main roads usually remain passable. Birdlife swells and the heat becomes more bearable between showers.
