Western Coast & Banjul (Banjul, Serekunda, Bakau, Tanji)

August tends to be the wettest month on the western coast, with long spells of heavy rain and swollen drainage channels in towns like Serekunda and Bakau. The river mouth is high and estuary boat trips are often postponed; however, the showers also clear the air and turn the inland mangroves intensely green. Crowds are low - accommodation prices may be lower - but travel becomes more about flexibility and patience with local transport.

Lower River & Estuary (Kuntaur, Tanji estuary, river islands)

August brings the peak of river swelling and the estuary can flood adjacent lowlands on heavy rainfall days, disrupting tracks to small villages and occasional market stops. Water travel remains the main way to reach some islands, but check timings and safety; local ferries may run on reduced timetables after storms. The birdlife and lush mangroves are at their most active, though mosquitoes are very present - pack repellents and a long-sleeved top for evening boat trips.

Central River & Janjanbureh region (Janjanbureh/Georgetown, Kuntaur hinterland)

August is usually the wettest and most challenging month here: whole stretches of dirt road can be washed or impassable and river currents are strong after sustained rain. Local markets in Janjanbureh shrink and some excursions are suspended, yet riverine wildlife is active and the landscape is at its greenest. Travel requires flexibility - allow extra days for internal transfers and carry plastic covers for luggage.

Upper River & Basse Santa Su (Basse, Sandu, far east)

August often brings the most consistent rain for the far east, yet totals are typically lower than the western river basin so communities remain relatively connected by road. Streams and seasonal rivers flow fuller and farming activity peaks as crops establish. Travelers should expect sporadic short delays on rural tracks and pack waterproof layers and strong insect protection.
