Western Coast & Banjul (Banjul, Serekunda, Bakau, Tanji)

Late-winter days in this coastal band stay dry and mostly sunny, with clear blue skies and crisp mornings that make exploring Banjul’s markets and the Kachikally crocodile pool pleasant. The Harmattan can blow sand and fine dust from the Sahara, so sunglasses and a face-covering are handy on gusty days; visibility sometimes drops slightly. Birdwatchers find the mudflats near Tanji exposed and easy to scan, and hotels along the coast are quiet before the spring uptick.

Lower River & Estuary (Kuntaur, Tanji estuary, river islands)

By late winter the mudflats at low tide are prime for shorebird watching and the river channels are straightforward to navigate; February is also when local towns like Kuntaur show preparations for spring markets. The air remains dry and evenings are pleasant, though occasional sand haze can make early mornings gritty. Roads to estuary villages are reliable; this is a convenient time to explore mangrove fringes with minimal rain interruptions.

Central River & Janjanbureh region (Janjanbureh/Georgetown, Kuntaur hinterland)

Late winter days offer clear skies and excellent wildlife visibility in February - migratory birds are often easy to spot around river lagoons near Janjanbureh. Independence Day (Feb 18) can bring parades and local events in towns, increasing local transport use and small crowds at markets. Pack sunscreen for strong midday sun and a light jacket for cooler evening gatherings.

Upper River & Basse Santa Su (Basse, Sandu, far east)

Late winter days in February are dry and bright, and the bustling market at Basse draws traders from surrounding villages with minimal travel disruption. The Harmattan can create a dusty veil at times, muting distant hills but not stopping activity. This is an excellent month for cultural visits and longer drives as temperatures are comfortable and mosquitoes are scarce.
