Western Coast & Banjul (Banjul, Serekunda, Bakau, Tanji)

July is in the thick of the rainy season along the Atlantic; downpours are frequent, sometimes in intense bursts that clear the air but leave roads sodden and puddles around market areas. Ferry crossings to Barra and nearby islands can be disrupted during storms, and many small tour operators pause river trips on bad days. Hotels remain open but expect damp conditions; pack waterproof footwear and be ready for sudden timetable changes.

Lower River & Estuary (Kuntaur, Tanji estuary, river islands)

In July the estuary is lush and high: frequent tropical downpours raise river levels and increase current strength, making some smaller channels harder to access for canoes and pirogues. Sediment loads rise and the river appears browner; boat trip operators will cancel passages in rough weather, and low-lying riverside trails can be waterlogged. It’s a rewarding time for dedicated birders and naturalists who don’t mind damp conditions and changing schedules.

Central River & Janjanbureh region (Janjanbureh/Georgetown, Kuntaur hinterland)

July is deep in the wet season and the river rises appreciably - small feeder roads can be flooded and some rural villages become reachable mostly by boat. The humidity is high and thunderstorms frequent; photography and birding are excellent for those prepared for wet conditions. Expect fewer tourists and a quieter pace, but bring waterproof boots and expect altered timetables for inter-town buses.

Upper River & Basse Santa Su (Basse, Sandu, far east)

July is part of the main wet season but the Upper River is drier than areas further west, so you’ll see a patchwork of wet fields and dry roads; river crossings rise but rarely inundate the main routes. Daytime humidity rises and evenings can be muggy, with mosquitoes becoming a greater nuisance around stagnant pools. Travel is doable with caution; boat crossings of smaller tributaries may be affected after heavy sessions of rain.
