About Pemuteran#
Pemuteran is a relaxed diving and snorkeling village on Bali’s remote northwest coast, a world away from the crowded south. Strung along a calm, black-sand bay backed by dry hills, it grew up around some of the island’s best underwater sites and has become a model for community-led coral restoration.
Divers and snorkelers come for the sheltered reefs just offshore and, above all, for Menjangan Island, the region’s premier dive spot, ringed by dramatic vertical walls and soft coral gardens teeming with reef fish and the occasional reef shark. The island lies within West Bali National Park, a vast reserve of mangroves, dry forest and tiny islets that is best explored by boat and is home to the rare Bali starling.
The village itself is low-key, with small resorts and warungs spread along the shore. Getting to & Around Pemuteran#
Northwest Bali’s Pemuteran is more remote than southern Bali resorts: travel involves longer drives along coastal and rural roads and is oriented around sea access for snorkeling/diving. Services are more limited, so arrivals are commonly pre-arranged transfers or private cars, and sea conditions can affect boat schedules.
Pemuteran is best reached by road from Gilimanuk ferry terminal (the Bali-Java ferry) or by a longer drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) in Denpasar - expect about 1.5-2 hours from Gilimanuk or roughly 3-4 hours from DPS. Gilimanuk is the main gateway if arriving from Java by ferry.

Pemuteran on northwest Bali is easily reached by road from the Gilimanuk ferry terminal (Java-Bali crossings operated by ASDP); the drive from Gilimanuk to Pemuteran takes about 1.5-2 hours. For visitors flying in, driving from Ngurah Rai (DPS) is about 3-4 hours depending on traffic.
