Skeleton Coast & Namib Desert (coastline to Sossusvlei)

October brings stronger inland heat by day while coastal areas remain pleasantly cool and breezy; the first thunderheads sometimes pop up over the escarpment toward month-end. Sossusvlei becomes hotter and visitors should plan activities for early morning and late afternoon; vehicle cooling systems are taxed on long drives. The approach of the rainy season inland signals a change in insect activity and sudden storms higher on the plateau.

Central Highlands & Khomas Plateau (Windhoek, Waterberg, Brandberg)

October starts the move toward the wet season: days are hot and afternoons occasionally see building cumulus and the odd storm around Windhoek. The dry heat will feel intense in exposed areas, so plan outdoor activities early in the day and have shade options. Road surfaces begin to soften in isolated spots should afternoon downpours occur.

Etosha & Northern Safari Areas (Etosha, Kunene, Omusati)

October begins the build toward the brief wet season; hot days and occasional thunderclouds return, and you may see the first rain squalls by month-end around Kunene. Wildlife disperses slowly as ephemeral pools refill, so viewing becomes a little less concentrated. Carry a light raincoat and keep flexible plans-some camps start to reduce certain activities as the rains approach.

Zambezi (former Caprivi) & Kavango Riverlands (Katima Mulilo, Rundu, Divundu)

October brings building heat and the first moody thunderheads of the coming wet season-short, fierce storms may refresh the area but roads can be temporarily affected. Vegetation still looks dry but migratory birds begin to return, and insects start to multiply as humidity increases. Lightweight breathable clothing, good sun protection and insect repellent become more important.

Kalahari & Southern Namibia (Fish River Canyon, Keetmanshoop, Karas)

October brings strong heating across the south and the first coastal influences may bring fog to lower elevations in some years; afternoons are hot and dry, and sun protection is essential. The Fish River Canyon is intensely hot by midday-plan rim walks in cooler hours-while nights are comfortable for outside dining at lodges. Road surfaces start to soften slightly ahead of the summer rains but remain largely passable.
