Skeleton Coast & Namib Desert (coastline to Sossusvlei)

Mornings are crisp in May with cold, clear coastal air and reduced fog around Swakopmund-windy afternoons still make the coast lively for water sports. Sossusvlei enjoys warm daytime temperatures and spectacular light on the dunes; it’s one of the best months for photography and for combining coastal and desert stops. Crowds increase slightly as the southern winter spills into Namibia, so book lodges near the national parks in advance.

Central Highlands & Khomas Plateau (Windhoek, Waterberg, Brandberg)

May is one of the most pleasant months here-cool, dry days and chilly nights make for comfortable trekking and city exploration in Windhoek. Roads are firm and dust levels drop, improving visibility for aerial sightseeing around Brandberg and Spitzkoppe. Expect an increase in international visitors; book midrange lodges early if you plan to combine city and plateau stays.

Etosha & Northern Safari Areas (Etosha, Kunene, Omusati)

May offers clear, cool mornings and dry days-prime safari conditions across Etosha and the north-when wildlife increasingly gathers at permanent springs and pans. Mosquito pressure drops, lowering malaria transmission risk though precautions remain prudent in the far north. Visibility for predators improves and camps fill with international tourists seeking classic dry-season viewing.

Zambezi (former Caprivi) & Kavango Riverlands (Katima Mulilo, Rundu, Divundu)

May mornings along the Kavango are pleasantly cool and the rivers settle into navigable levels-this is one of the best windows for boat safaris and fishing excursions. Floodplains expose islands where wildlife concentrates and nights are comfortable for open-air dining at riverside camps. Pack lightweight warm layers for nights and reserve river activities early as the high season begins.

Kalahari & Southern Namibia (Fish River Canyon, Keetmanshoop, Karas)

May is comfortably cool and dry with clear skies-ideal for visiting the Fish River Canyon and for night-time stargazing in Karas. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, and early-winter frost is possible in low-lying spots at high elevation, so a warm jacket for mornings helps. Fewer tourists visit than in the north’s high season; this is a quiet, peaceful time for exploration.
