Skeleton Coast & Namib Desert (coastline to Sossusvlei)

April brings clearer skies and less fog as the cold current weakens slightly, producing cooler but more stable days on the shoreline and pleasantly warm conditions inland at Sossusvlei. This is a popular month for self-drive visitors because roads are drier and daytime heat is bearable for dune climbs and scenic flights. Nights begin to cool noticeably; lightweight layers and a warmer sleeping bag are wise for desert camps.

Central Highlands & Khomas Plateau (Windhoek, Waterberg, Brandberg)

April mornings bring crisp light and generally dryer conditions across the central highlands; Windhoek enjoys comfortable daytime temperatures and cooler nights. This is an ideal window for scenic drives across the Khomas Hochland and for visiting Waterberg Plateau before the high-season crowds arrive. Pack layers: warm sweaters are useful for evenings after clear, sun-filled days.

Etosha & Northern Safari Areas (Etosha, Kunene, Omusati)

April’s showers taper in many northern sectors and the bush remains green with clear skies returning between storms; early mornings are pleasantly cool for game drives. As water disperses, animals concentrate at permanent waterholes around Etosha, improving viewing at preferred lodges; dusty tracks begin to firm. This transitional month is great for birding and for witnessing the gradual re-focus of wildlife on main water sources.

Zambezi (former Caprivi) & Kavango Riverlands (Katima Mulilo, Rundu, Divundu)

April sees the Zambezi region transitioning out of the wet season: river levels lower enough to reopen some boat routes, and mornings are cooler and more pleasant for early safaris. Vegetation is lush and bird activity is high, making April a great time for wildlife photography with fewer mosquitoes than peak season. Expect some remaining mud on roads and keep waterproof boots handy for wet tracks.

Kalahari & Southern Namibia (Fish River Canyon, Keetmanshoop, Karas)

April’s mornings are cooler and drier; the Kalahari browns to gold and long scenic drives to the Fish River Canyon are comfortable without the high-season traffic. This is a favored month for hiking the canyon rim and exploring the quiver tree fields near Keetmanshoop-pack layers for chilly dawns and good walking shoes. Road surfaces firm up, making long self-drive itineraries more reliable.
