Skeleton Coast & Namib Desert (coastline to Sossusvlei)

June’s coastal days are brisk and often overcast with persistent fog in the early hours, but inland desert temperatures are excellent for exploring-midday warmth and cool nights. Sossusvlei and Sesriem are quiet and great for long walks up dunes without the intense heat of summer; bring a warm jacket for early-morning outings. The Skeleton Coast itself is cool and remote; boat and flight charters can be subject to strong winds so keep flexible itineraries.

Central Highlands & Khomas Plateau (Windhoek, Waterberg, Brandberg)

June’s highland mornings can be surprisingly cold, with clear skies and single-digit temperatures at dawn around Windhoek; daytime sun warms quickly to pleasant highs. Frost is possible in outlying valleys on the coldest nights, so a warm layer and insulated sleeping arrangements matter for campsites. The dry, stable weather is perfect for long drives and wildlife watching in privately managed reserves on the plateau.

Etosha & Northern Safari Areas (Etosha, Kunene, Omusati)

June is one of the best months for game viewing: hot, clear days and cool-to-chilly nights concentrate animals at waterholes in Etosha and Kunene. The light is excellent for photography and long daytime drives are comfortable; pack warm clothing for dawn and dusk drives. Roads are dry and firm, making remote camp access straightforward and self-drive safaris reliable.

Zambezi (former Caprivi) & Kavango Riverlands (Katima Mulilo, Rundu, Divundu)

June’s cool, dry days make riverside game and birdwatching superb; Katima Mulilo and Divundu enjoy comfortable daytime temperatures while nights can be chilly. The clarity of the skies is excellent for photography and river cruises are widely available without the wet-season disruption. Expect more visitors and smoother road access to remote lodges as tracks firm.

Kalahari & Southern Namibia (Fish River Canyon, Keetmanshoop, Karas)

June can be surprisingly cold at dawn across the plateau and canyon edges, with daytime warmth returning by mid-morning; the air is crisp and very dry. Trails at Fish River and environs are at their most stable and remote camps are easy to reach as tracks firm up. Cold nights necessitate warm sleeping bags and thermals for camping or simple lodges without heating.
