Namibia in November: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Skeleton Coast & Namib Desert (coastline to Sossusvlei)

November’s sky over the Namib often shows big, dramatic clouds to the east and warm afternoons inland, while the coast is still cooled by near-surface fog. Brief, isolated showers in the far interior can occur and any rain brings an immediate bloom of desert flora on gravel plains-excellent for macro and landscape photographers. Heat and increasing humidity inland advise light, breathable clothing and attention to afternoon storm forecasts.

Central Highlands & Khomas Plateau (Windhoek, Waterberg, Brandberg)

November brings heavier atmospheric instability with more frequent thundery showers as the rains approach-the central highlands get short, intense storms that lower dust and make river crossings unpredictable. Birdlife perks up and waterfalls on the Waterberg become dramatic, which is great for nature photographers. Pack a lightweight rain shell and expect some route changes on gravel roads.

Etosha & Northern Safari Areas (Etosha, Kunene, Omusati)

November sees a return of frequent afternoon storms and rising humidity; the north becomes greener and many species breed, but mosquitoes increase sharply and malaria risk grows. Road conditions may deteriorate on secondary tracks after heavy downpours, making longer transfers unpredictable. Birdwatchers love this month for migratory arrivals, but safari logistics require more contingency planning.

Zambezi (former Caprivi) & Kavango Riverlands (Katima Mulilo, Rundu, Divundu)

November is humid again with frequent afternoon showers returning; river levels begin to rise and some low-lying camps may reposition activities. November’s humidity rises a little and showers become more likely late in the month, though the southern rains are much less reliable than in the north. When rain falls it can refresh arid landscapes and trigger surprising plant blooms, but also create short-term access issues on dirt tracks. Pack a small waterproof and insect repellent; late rains are often welcomed by local farmers.
